In Super Mario Bros 2...

...is there really anyone here that doesn't almost always play as Luigi?

The fact the game had no save feature whatsoever always bothered me.

Mario 3 was a million times better.

Mario Brothers 2 is the red headed step child of the mario brothers franchise.

In before the snobs and pedants who say that only the Lost Levels is the "real" SMB2.

That's because it is

Unlike the majority of other Mario titles, Super Mario Bros. 2 was not developed from the ground up. Rather, it is a redesign of the Japanese Family Computer Disk System game "Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panikku" (夢工場 ドキドキパニック, lit. "Dream Factory: Heart-Pounding Panic"[3]). Nintendo's original sequel to Super Mario Bros. was released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 2 in 1986; however, because of that game's difficulty and its close similarities to the original game, Nintendo decided not to release it in the West at that time. Because Super Mario Bros. 2 is a redesign of a non-Mario game, the game differs greatly from the original Super Mario Bros., though many elements from the game have since become part of the Mario series canon. The redesigned Western version of Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan in 1992 under the title Super Mario USA (スーパーマリオUSA Sūpā Mario USA?), and in 1993 a 16-bit remake of the original Japanese version was released to the rest of the world as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels as part of Super Mario All-Stars.

It was the first Mario game to let you play as non-Mario Bros. characters. To just dismiss it and say it isn't the "real" SMB2 does a disservice to its place in Mario history.

I've played them both to completion several times, and my judgment is that the American SMB2 is much more innovative, had more of a lasting impact on the Mario franchise, and is just flat-out a better game than the Japanese SMB2. The Japanese SMB2 is basically just a re-hash of SMB1, except harder.

And that doesn't mean it's a bad game or not the "real" SMB2.

If it makes MayDay and others feel better, I consider LL SMB1.5 and this still SMB2.

I preferred the Princess, you could just float over everything.

It all depends on the level, but Mario is usually my least used.

No, I was not insinuating it was a bad game... just that compared to the rest of the franchise, this one comes from left field.

I think Peach was usually the go to character for me, switching to Luigi for specific levels. Also had to use Toad on specific levels where there were lots of coins to pick up.

And I have no problem calling it a Mario game. Even if it wasn't originally it's still a great game all around and worthy of being grouped with Mario.

Mario 3 didn't have a save either champ. I bought it the day it came out from Kay-Bee for $70. I was a 10yo pimp walking through the mall on that day. KFC Chicken Littles and a biscuit for a celebratory lunch too. People saw the yellow box through the bag and got jealous. Great times

Mario 2 sucked. That would be like Space Harrier featuring Pitfall Harry.

I was always Luigi and my sister was Princess, Mario was the worst I thought. Toad would be fun to use cuz you could really rack up coins, in the other world picking up roots..... I still loved the game

I don't understand why a company would remove such a big selling item from their menu. They had to make good money off of them. So we're about the same age if you knew about those. Remember when Kentucky Fried Chicken was actually really good before they became KFC? I used to love it.

The version for Wii does. I was referring to the newer versions where it saves your progress automatically. But yeah, I guess the original did not have a save either. Back then you had to beat it one sitting or leave the system on and come back to it the next day.

If the Wii is letting you save your progress, that's really lame. What's next? Unlimited re-spawning and save points for Contra? They need to make some games again where if you screw up, you have to start from the beginning. Kids have to learn winning and losing. You shouldn't get a 1st place trophy for participation. It's sending the wrong message.
