Bernie Parent: overrated? - Fan Response: NO

I have a cousin who says BP was "right place, right time" in 74 and 75 and that his skills were at best above-average. Please settle this debate.

Would Brodeur have that many wins or shutouts if he didn't play behind the Devils?

He also wouldn't have the most wins in a season record without the ability of the shootout.

Games could end in ties in Bernie's day.

Tell your friend to go back and watch old games of the Flyers when Bernie was their goalie.... he was clearly head and shoulders above being just above average. oh yeah, Your cousin is a moron

No kidding. Bernie carried the team on his back - he was simply unbeatable.

If you watched Thomas in the finals this year, just think how he would look if he was twice as good - then he'd be like Bernie!

just going back and watching clips of those 2 seasons wont do it justice just how good he was those 2 seasons. anyone who is old enough to remember the guy play can tell you this.

This probably can't be stressed enough.

I wasn't alive, but my relatives tell me that Bernie was a wall, and that this team would have zero Cup wins if not for Bernie.

Just search for Bernie Parent in the HHOF. You'll find your answer there.

Had your cousin looked at Bernie's numbers for those two years... Regular and Postseason -- even ignoring his not being able to see the pucks very well a couple of those games in Buffalo due to fog -- and does he know he completely shut down and out both the mighty Bruins and the French Connection in the closeout games? Has he looked at the shutouts those seasons and the record of number of personal wins in a season that was only broken decades later when OT & SO wins were allowed in the Regular Seasons?

Bernie, while not the greatest career goalie of all times, may have had the best two season stretch of any NHL goalie in League history... and topped them both off with Cups and Conn Smyths.

I'd say the Flyers were in the right place, right time those seasons... and that was in front of Bernie Parent.

I think Bernie and Clarke have to get at least equal billing. There were no Cups without BOTH of them - and Shero.

And really, Clarke should have gotten on of those Conn Smythe's too. I thought he deserved the first one, especially. He willed the team to victory over Boston. But there was no way the hockey writers were going to give him the satisfaction.

I chose this user name because Bernie Parent was the reason why I fell in love with the Flyers. He was the best of his time, period.

How old is your cousin? I have followed hockey since the mid 60's and for those two years I have never seen a better GT. How many GT's have had bumper stickers made out for them and impacted the entire Delaware Valley like he did?We do not win those two cups without Bernie.....Period. Next to Bobby Clarke he is one of my all time Flyers. I guess we just put above average at best players in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Tell your cousin he is wrong. But I hope it is because he is young and was not around during those glory years to see what Bernie did for this team and for this area.

As I have stated before. My greatest Flyers goal of all time was Clarke's OT winner in game two at Boston. We knew then that we had just won the cup because there was no way Boston was going to get home ice back from us!!

The only overrated goalie I can think of is Ron Hextall. Bernie is a legend, his wins record would still be standing if they didnt institute the shootouts.

BernieParent is one of the most overrated posters on HF!

As for Frenchie, he played when Ken Dryden and Tony Esposito were in their prime, and Bernie earned the hardware. PuckBoy, please tell your cousin he's getting three demerits for this.

Brodeur is the only reason that the Devils ever won anything! Singlehandedly! He made Stevens, Niedermayer, Daneyko, and Rafalski great! Don't let anyone ever tell you differently! Brodeur continually played behind AHL calibre teams with coaches worse than John Stevens!
