The 2012 Roster

Yes, I know it's early right now to be speculating on something a year away but just for the sake of discussion I'd like to know people's thoughts on this? It's going to be very interesting to see how things play out because we will have a lot of prospects that could probably step into the lineup and we also have a bunch of Free Agents to sign.

Here's what we're looking at for players under contract;

Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Eberle
Paajarvi - Horcoff - xxxxxxxxxx
xxxxxxxx - xxxxxxx - xxxxxxxx
Eager - Belanger - Jones

Whitney - xxxxxxx
xxxxxx - Gilbert
Smid - xxxxxxx

xxxxxxxx
Khabibulin

Smyth, Hemsky, Gagner, Omark, Brule, Peckham, Dubnyk, Sutton, Barker, Chorney, Hordichuk will need new contracts. We have prospects like Hamilton, Lander, Pitlick, Hartikainen, Petry that could very well be ready to step in to the lineup full time by then. Now, there will be the draft and Free Agency before the season starts in 2012 obviously, and that's something we will have no idea how it will play out but just for fun what is your early projected lineup?

Send a message via MSN to Eberle
Smyth will be resigned.

I'm hoping by then Horcs joins him on the third line.

Thanks for making this thread! I'd been hoping for some discussion about next year and the year after!

Here's what I'm hoping for:

Trade Gagner/Petry for Bogosian

Draft in the top three and get Ryan Murray

Re Sign Hemsky for two years at 4.5 per

Re sign Smyth for 2 years at 1.5 per (or something like that)

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Paajarvi-Pitlick-Hemsky
Smyth-Lander-Hartakainnen
Eager-Horcoff-Jones
Belanger

Whitney-Bogosian
Murray-Smid
Peckham-Marincin

Dubnyk
Bunz

Marincin, Musil and Klefbom are all likely in the AHL in 2012 (Klefbom maybe in Europe for one more season. All of them will get 1-3 full AHL seasons to develop.

The Oilers will have to make a Gagner or Hemsky decision this year. My guess is that Gagner will be kept and Hemsky moved. If they keep Gagner, he could be forced to the RW by Lander.

When I look through my all-seeing eyes...

2011-12 "competitive" finish 22nd
Hall Horcoff Hemsky
Smyth Lander/Gagner Eberle
Paajarvi RNH/Lander Omark
Hartikainen Belanger Jones
Eager, Hordichuk, VandeVelde (call-up)

Whitney Sutton
Smid Gilbert
Peckham Barker
Chorney, Petry

Khabbi
Dubnyk

Moved by Sept: Brule (LTIR?), RNH (post 9 games)
Traded by deadline: Gagner, Hemsky, Gilbert
Trade Ideas:
Hemsky, Gilbert, 2013 1st for Shea Weber + conditional 2nd (if Hemsky resigns)
Gagner + Petry/Smid for Bogosian (I just made this one up now )

2012-13 - "playoff challengers" finish 13th
Hall Horcoff Eberle
Paajarvi Lander Omark
Smyth RNH Hartikainen
Eager Belanger Jones
Vandevelde, Pitlick (call-ups)

Whitney (UFA/trade - ie Weber?)
Smid Petry (Bogosian?)
Peckham Barker
Teubert

Dubnyk
Khabbi

Traded after season: Horcoff

2013-14 - "playoff contenders" - finish 1st
Hall RNH Eberle
Paajarvi Lander Omark
Smyth Pitlick Hartikainen
Eager Belanger Jones
Hamilton, VandeVelde (call-up)

Whitney (UFA/trade - ie Weber?)
Smid Petry (Bogosian?)
Peckham Marincin/Klefbom
2012 1st pick

Dubnyk/UFA
Bunz/UFA

Haven't added up potential salaries for this last team...could be expensive...

Hemsky is the big question mark for next year, and what they end up doing with him is going to have a major impact on the team. I think Smyth will probably be re-signed, but you never know. I kind of got the feeling that Tambellini didn't really want to trade for him in the first place, and only did it because of the reaction he would've got if he hadn't.

Other than those two, unless Tambellini swings a big trade, I wouldn't expect next year's team to look a whole lot different than this year's squad. Tuebert probably replaces Sutton on defense, and Brule gets replaced with whichever one of Lander, Pitlick, Hamilton, VV, Hartikainen is most ready. Aside from that, I wouldn't expect much to change.

I think Smyth will resign for cheap. Something like 2 years @ 3 mm/year

next years lines:

Hall - Nugent-Hopkins - Eberle
Paajarvi - Horcoff - Hemsky
Smyth - Belanger - Hartikainen
Eager - Lander - Jones

Whitney - Petry
Peckham - Gilbert
Smid - Barker

Dubnyk
Khabibulin

Gags traded
Hemmer resigned
Smyth resigned
Brule traded
OMark traded
Hordichuck released
Barker resigned
Sutton released
Peckham resigned
Chorney traded

Smyth comes back
Hemksy and Gagner traded at deadline this year

I see a transformation happen in the 2012 season

begining of 2012
Hall-Horcoff-Eberle
Pajaarvi-Belanger-Omark
Smyth-RNH-Jones
Eager-Lander-Hartikainen

after 50 games

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Pajaarvi-Lander-Omark
Smyth-Horcoff-Hartikainen
Eager-Belanger-Jones

The one thing I don't understand is how we'd trade Gagner, Brule, Omark, and Chorney and not get 1 NHL player back. I'd hope that, at this stage of the rebuild, the days of trading NHLers for draft picks are more or less done.

With the likelyhood of only of the bolded players playing this year in the NHL (RNH or Lander)...... I really cant see having 2 rookie centers, a rookie #3 dman, and a rookie backup that makes the jump from the WHL to NHL.

If that's your defence you can forget about the picture. Not even close to what we need...Need another 2 x top 4, at least....

Depends if Gagner improves or not...but if he doesn't, then I'd be dissapointed if RNH wasn't the #1 option at C 2 years from his draft on a team with two ~50 pt centers for the other options. That's dissapointment though, doesn't mean I'd write him off, big difference.

I'm surprised that no one has Hamilton in their line up? How far away do you guys think he is from making the NHL? By 2012, I can see him fighting for a spot and being the first call up in case of injuries etc but by 2013, he should be on the team full time.
