This is a guy who has consistently put up decent numbers at the NHL level, and he's on a 2 way contract. Previous signings like Sterling, Conner and Taffe have nothing on this guy. His career NHL totals are 225 points in 447 games (with 93 goals). The idea that we're worried about Jeffrey, Letestu and Johnson being lost on waivers is pretty reassuring about the depth on this club.

But the idea that we have a guy like this on a 2 way contract makes me feel like depth is the last thing we should be talking about.

Let's go back to arguing about whether or not Niskanen is garbage, huh? Cause signing Williams is a good thing; thread closed.

The Pens site has an interview with him. Apparently DB has already spoke with him about the possibilities on the PP? Maybe he is going to get a shot at making the team.

FFS, how are they going to fit him on the team?

No idea how we'll fit him in the lineup. But a PP specialist isn't necessarily a bad thing to have.

1st Unit Players
Sullivan
Crosby
Neal
Letang
Malkin

2nd Unit Players
Staal
Kennedy
Letestu
Kunitz
Jeffrey
Niskanen
Martin
Michalek

Where exactly is he going to fit in on the powerplay too? They shouldn't give him a roster spot just because he can play on our 2nd pp unit, while pushing out a more deserving player to waivers.

He might get a shot very early in the season (assuming he does well in camp / is in shape), but he won't last long unless he produces immediately IMO and is not a defensive liability. If he does produce / turns his career around... hey... great. Keep him up. But it's a long shot.

Sounds like DB was just doing some recruiting. Obviously the guy wants to have a shot at using the NHL portion of his contract. He'll have to really earn it and a few players would have to be injured, but the opportunity is there.

I can't tell where your frustration is directed. It's not as though management has promised him a spot on the team out of camp or anything. I don't think you should worry about losing a young player just because DB did a little recruiting. The likelihood of Williams forcing Shero's hand and cracking our opening night roster is similar to the chance that guys before him like Brett Sterling had of doing the same. It exists, but it's not very likely to occur.

How can anyone be against this, especially given the injuries we had last year.

And why not give him a shot in training camp.

Great small move on the Penguins side with zero downside and could pay dividends if the need arises, and it likely will as injuries are part of the game.

I wouldn't call it being worried. I have no doubt that this guy is probably never going to see the NHL roster (barring the return of the injury plague). I wouldn't call it being frustrated either.

I reacted that way because I keep seeing more and more players added, and people thinking they actually have a shot on the big club, yet we have no spots left for them really. At least not without pushing out somebody else that we'd have to lose to waivers.

With the injuries the team had last year it just looks like Shero is making this team as deep as possible.

We have insane depth in terms of defensemen if someone goes down. Now we are decently deep in terms of forward call ups. It's good to see. Williams on this type of deal is a fantastic thing for when someone at forward goes down.

Overall this has been a good offseason for the man named Shero.

Shero's reputation has slipped the earthly bounds of "man" and entered the realm of "legend".

"Agent told, that Willy would like to come to Europe. We answered that we want him to Pori Ässät (where Williams played in lockout). After couple days, agent sent an offer to us which was a million bucks for the season. I called to our GM do we have enough money to sign him? We didn't have, told Pori Ässät's Mika Toivola."

--

Williams gets 100k in AHL, 600k in NHL, asks 1.000k for playing in Europe? Haha.

I was almost coming to post this. Guy gets 100k in AHL, where he most likely will play most of the season and settles to that after he wanted $$$ONE BILLION DOLLARS$$$ from Ässät! What a character.

I'm not sure what is so weird about him asking for more money to play in Europe. I'd do the exact same thing, especially since a Euro team is more willing to give him more money. Am I missing something?

He said he would like to come to Europe, so yes, not because he want's so badly to play there, but because he would get more money? If he really would like to play in Europe, he would asked a lot less. Now Ässät laughed at his demands and he plays next season in AHL for 1/10 of his Ässät demand. Of course his primary hope is to play in NHL, but why Pittsburgh then? I think he won't see that much NHL money here without injuries.

And Finnish league isn't the richest, at least not Ässät so why not Swiss league or KHL if he wanted $1 million for playing hockey?

Do we even know what his salary is in the AHL? I think he could be coming close to what he could make in Europe in the AHL being an established player.

I figure Williams is a replacement for Hutchinson on the Baby Pens PP point and a possible callup if Sullivan is helping our PP but gets injured.

He only said he wanted to play in europe so they would listen to an offer.

Obviously he thinks he can crack the big club at some point and would rather stay state side to play in the nhl.
