Jets sign Ivan Telegin

Quote:
The Winnipeg Jets have added some depth to the one spot on the roster still in need of some punch – the centre ice position.

The Jets announced Tuesday they have signed Russian centre Ivan Telegin, who spent the last two years with the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League.

The 19-year-old native of Novokuznetsk, Russia was drafted in the fourth round (101st) overall by the Atlanta Thrashers last season and is coming off a season in which he scored 20 goals and added 41 assists in 59 games. Telegin also scored twice and added eight assists in 12 playoff games.

The 6-3, 185-pounder suited up for Russia at the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships in Saskatchewan.

He'll start in St Johns but a good depth signing. Glad they're still locking up draft picks.

He'll still be in Barrie this year with Scheifele and Hawerchuk after they just aquired him in June. Telegin is 19 and doesn't turn 20 until February, if he were to play in the AHL with St. Johns, he'd have to be 20 before the beginning of January.

Telegin scored 26 goals in 51 of a possible 68 games as a rookie for Saginaw in 2009-2010, and though he dipped in goals last season with 20, he doubled his assists from 18 (rookie year) to 41 last season and jumped from 44 to 61 points. If Telegin plays LW to Scheifele, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him hit 35-45 goals, 80-85 points.

Scheifele and Telegin should by dynamite together in Barrie this year, can't wait to see them come to town.

He'll actually continue in the OHL with the Barrie Colts this season. He could possibly see a call up to the AHL if Barrie doesn't make the playoffs or are eliminated from them. I'll be following Barrie a lot more with Telegin and Scheifele there.

Good depth signing, KevinOneel was raving about him. Hopefully we have a gem.

I'm pretty high on the kid, I hope he can develop along with Schiefele in Barrie. It'd be nice if they built some chemistry and carried it throught to when they play for us.

I don't think they'll be playing together, not on the same lines anyways. They're both centremen. I'd probably expect Telegin to be the 2C behind Scheifele on the depth chart, though.

I thought I had read somewhere that Telegin has played, and is projected by some to be a winger in the pros (I think guerzy may have eluded to it). If that the case then I could see them being linemates.
If not hopefully they can push each other to be better, which will help the Jets in the long run.

Did Telegin improve his defensive play and his puck movement this season?

Keep building the farm, sooooooo important we must not forget the system. The future and depth is in St Johns.

If Telegin was drafted before he came to the OHL, ie drafted out of Europe, he can play in the AHL prior to being 20. I'm not sure of Telegin's history, but that's what happened to Niklas Bergfors when he was drafted by the Fog Devils.

You're correct. However, after checking myself, Telegin was drafted out of the OHL in 2010.

Not only is Telegin connected to the team by Scheifele, but he's also friends with Burmistrov. That is quite encouraging. Russian players seem to adapt better when they have countrymen on the team, and with Burmi paving the way, thats good news.

Glad to hear it, whether it's fair or not the KHL has effected my view of Russian players.

Wish those eastern writers would knock off the "it's cold as hell in Winnipeg in the winter, how are you going to survive" bits. Both Telegin and Zherdev were asked about that this week.

Both stated it wouldn't be a problem. It just bugs the heck out of me.

Why doesn't anyone ask "It's hot as hell in Phoenix, Miami, Dallas, how are you going to survive the bad ice and the humidity?"

Psst, I understand that most NHLers like it that way.

I thought the Jets need a good centre, not the Ice Caps?
