I'm not disagreeing with you about Cormier being able to do a good job as a lefty setup guy, just pointing out that his track record does not point to greatness, although last season was an arguably great year for him. As for Silva, he is young, has a live arm and should be counted on to improve. No one can say how much improvement we can reasonably expect. I said I "hope" he does well. It was not a prediction. But I will go out on a limb here and predict that Wagner has a monster year.

In concerns to Bartolo Colon.

Larry Bowa has mentioned this guy's name when talking about bringing in a #1 pitcher to anchor the staff and what not.

Now, about that deal her turned down in Chicago. According to several news outlets, including ESPN and Peter Gammons I believe, Colon was not actually offered that hefty of a contract. Instead, it was a ploy by Colon's agent to quietly raise the value of Colon.

Right now, Colon is one of the three main pitchers available in free agency right now behind Pettite and possibly Milwood. Colon is the only guy the Phillies can reasonably go after because when talking to Montreal/Arizona right now, those two team want the world for Vazquez and Schilling.

To get Schilling, you need to get Schilling on our side. If he starts talking like he did years ago when he was a Phillie, the ball will get rolling and the Phils will have the leverage.

The good thing is this. The line-up is pretty much set. No real tampering is needed there. They need two exact pieces of the puzzle with one supplement. They need a #1 starter (Colon) and a set-up-man type of player (maybe a Tom Gordon [ex-Kerrigan guy]) and a bat to come off the bench (like a Reggie Sanders-type).

If Schilling plays for any team other than AZ this season it will be the Phillies. Unlikely the Phillies will make a trade b/c the price will include Hamels/Floyd.

According to the Philly papers today, the price is three major league ready players, and the top of that list is Brett Myers. As far as I am concerned, Arizona can kiss off on that one. Sorry, I'd love to have Curt back, but not at that cost. Nice try, though, AZ.

That's absurd, Myers is way past major league ready. He's an established SP. All we got from them of value was Padilla and they got their ring.

Does anybody know how compensatory draft picks work?

I agree that's absurd, but here it is: Jim Salisbury's article in 11/12's Inquirer. 8th paragraph (from my counting...your formatting my vary) down, Salisbury states the following:
Quote:
As for Curt Schilling... sure, he'd look good atop the Phils' rotation, but the Diamondbacks have set a high price - three major league-level players, starting with pitcher Brett Myers.
I would not give up Brett Myers alone for a 37 year old Curt Schilling coming off a season where he was injured. Sorry, the return is not worth it, so I hope Ed Wade goes in a different direction.

The other thing I'd be leery of is overpaying Colon. Colon's weight issues have me a touch nervous about him, as well as some injury troubles he's had in the past. While I think he'd be a good addition, I don't want it to come at too high a cost. As for Millwood, he's got Scott Boras as an agent. I really doubt the Phils will be in a position to meet whatever Mr. Bora$ demands salary-wise for a pitcher coming off the season he had last year.

I think the Phils want Pettite but Houston and NY would prolly be his 1st 2 choices. Millwood doesn't seem to be a priority. Boras' comments appear to only be an attempt at adding another team into the bidding to drive up the price. They should be able to get a MR w/ no problem. A SP will be tougher.

I think that the Phils want Vazquez but can't bring themselves to trading Hamels or Floyd in the deal.

I can't blame them either.

Every team in baseball wants Vazquez.

On Wagner:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1659935
Billy Wagner in 2003 threw 159 pitches over 100 mph. According to those who record such numbers in ballparks across the country, every other pitcher in baseball legitimately topped 100 mph a grand total of 40 times. Think about that. Bartolo Colon was next, with 12 pitches over 100.

That's scary. Before him the Phillies hardest thrower could probably only hit about 95, correct?

Ok,now that Schilling is out of the plan, who should we focus on?
I think there's something fishy about the Schilling-to-Boston thing.

Bartolo Colon

with the Yankees in the prosses of trying to get Pettitte re-upped and Sheffield signed, the Phillies might have a chance a getting him.

They’ll probably end up just re-signing Kevin Millwood because he isn’t getting a whole lot of interest.

yeah, that is probably the most likely scenario. I think he is a real good pitcher but I don't think that he is an ace. I just hope that they don't give him ace type of money.

He gave up nothing and he took a chance, the only drawback to the deal was the money, which was a fairly big drawback. Also, I don't understand why the Phillies didn't wait till after they would have offered Millwood arbitration, thus getting 1st round draft picks when he signs elsewhere. I'm still holding out hope that the Phillies will deal for Vazquez, but we'll see what happens.
