$7.5m is a lot closer to $8.5m than $4.75m. Looks like Poile didn't make too many convincing points

Im sure the Bruins felt this way after trading Thornton.

but it doesnt always work out that way.

If Shea wants to stay but is just being cautios, then fine, lets win big this year and hopefully he stays.

But if he wants out, lets get a really good return for him. yes it'll push our "window" back a little bit but it wont be our complete undoing.

thanks.

so poile saves 1 million by going to arbitration.(and this really is savings if we believe the other reports that Weber wanted to be the highest paid defenseman in the league which would mean he really wanted and thought he deserved 8.5 and likely wasnt going to settle for 7.5)

Poile isn't doing a great job at convincing anybody these days. Remember it's not all about the enormous 1Mil saved, it's about the 1 year deal.

I think he would have settled for $7.5m for one year. Poile wouldn't have, though.

I work with a buddy that is a Blackhawks fan and I just looked a CapGeek for the Hawks. How are they able to sign Kane, Toews, Hossa, Sharp, Keith, and Seabrook to long term contracts for less than 6.3 m/yr (Kane & Toews). Why are we not able to sign Top 6 talent to contracts like this? ie Webber, Suter or any other top 6 player. Makes me wonder!

Becaaaaaaaaaause the Hawks play in one of the biggest media markets in the world which affords them the ability to spend to the cap every year, thus opening the door for tapered contracts, like Duncan Keith, making it more enticing to sign since it's front loaded while also reducing the overall cap hit?

And you can't tell me Weber is 2mil better than Hossa, Sharp or Keith, and over 1mil+ better than Kane and Toews... IMHO.

From looking at the contracts next year both Suter and Rinne are UFA. I guess next year it might be easy for Weber to decide whether he wants to stay a predator based on whether DP can get Suter/Rinne signed.

If Nashville has an off year this year, it could be pretty bad for the organization.

You are looking at cap hit, not real salary. One year deals will almost always been more than the cap hit would be spread out over five or six years when you're talking about star players. Had Weber signed a six year contract at $7m cap hit he could have seen $9m on the first year of that deal.

I understand the Large Market issue and spend to the Cap, but if you take away say Seabrooks salary (5.8mil) then that puts them very close to the Midpoint. Are they just a Seabrook better than we are? I know it is more difficult than that and maybe that is the isue with SW, Idk. And I also know the difference between Cap hit and avg dollars spent, but surely something can be worked out (hope is more like it). If not, then move on now, do not wait till you pass go! Trade trade trade!

This is what I was thinking. Poile doesn't usually like to negotiate new contracts until the end of the year. This upcoming season however he's going to have to change his tune if he wants to keep all three.

Next offseason:

UFA:
Suter
Rinne
Tootoo

RFA:
Weber
Kostitsyn
Wilson
Geoffrion
O'Reilly
Blum
Lindback
Laakso

Don't worry... David Poile is on it. The organization is usually timely in getting deals done.

We also finished three spots ahead of Chicago, who barely got into the play offs, and went to the second round. Our top six forwards weren't better than Chicago's, but our bottom six were. Our defense was on par, if not slightly better. Our goaltending was vastly superior. They aren't just "one Seabrook" better. In fact, as of right now they aren't better at all. We are, however, just one season of spending to the cap away from being the best team in our division. Too bad it won't happen.

Is Weber really worth 1.5 million more than Parise on a one year deal?

Ouch this number hurts. If he is looking for a long term contract at that number I fully endorse Poile walking away.

As long as Suter and Rinne approach Poile in a timely fashion to begin negotiations, the Preds are fine. I'll be so mad at them if they wait until the last minute to call Poile to start the discussions.

This helps set the bar for what he will be looking for next year if he even wants to stay in Nashville. I think this confirms there is no way we can keep the all of the big 3 together past this year.
