Sign Drury for Rochester?

So I was reading a few articles and was thinking how great it would be to pick up Drury for the Amerks. A lot of people in Rochester are complaining that Regier doesnt love them and wont sign any centers.

He's still available and I have yet to hear any rumor at all about the guy. People seem to be seeing him as kryptonite at the moment.

Here's a quote from Darcy yesterday.

Quote:
Regier said the Sabres are still interested in signing a couple of NHL veteran-type forwards for the Amerks and may wait until closer to training camp to find players who did not get an NHL deal.
http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/article503004.ece

Drury could certainly fit into that category if teams are still too afraid of adding him before the season starts.

Heres a couple questions though..
Do you think he'd come back to the Sabres organization if given the chance and if so, would he go to a minor league team?
Do you think he'd be the kind of player who'd embrace teaching the next generation of NHL players?

Even if he made it through all of free-agency without any teams even kicking the tires?

He'll probably retire and coach somewhere before going in the AHL.

NHL vets looking for contracts that fill the scoring bill are guys like Kyle Wellwood, Mike Comrie, Robbie Schremp, and Patrick O'Sullivan. I don't see a 35 year old Drury willing to rehab his knee enough to play just to ride the bus in the AHL.

Drury's too proud to play in the AHL. He'd retire if it came to that.

You still need two knees to play in the AHL.

Drury has one.

Count me in on the side that thinks Drury would be a good addition to the organization but, given how proud an athlete he is, I have a hard time seeing him accept a demotion to the AHL. He would probably retire if he can't find an NHL job.

Agreed. Don't see him in the A.

I don't think Drury will play in the AHL but not because of some perceived "pride" on his part. If he was 100% healthy and no team wanted to give him another shot, I think absolutely he'd play in the AHL in an attempt to rejuvenate his career. Drury is above all a hard worker and competitive guy, if he wanted to retire he would have let the Rangers place him on LTIR and collected his full paycheck while sitting at home. He fought for the chance to play this year and if he needs to prove himself in the AHL I think he'd do it.

However I think he'll wait a little longer before taking that route. Let his knee heal up, see if any NHL team comes calling mid season when the injuries start to pile up. There's no sense taking a risk reinjuring his knee in the AHL right now.

I don't think he harbors any illusions of rejuvenating. Its not like he only has a tarnished reputation. He's 35 and at the end of the road. If he can't play at 35, he won't be back at 36. He'll retire I think.

Plenty of hockey players can be effective with one leg.

I think there was a reason he included a NMC in his initial contract with the Rangers. I can't see Drury going into the NHL, let alone with the Sabres affiliate.

The Sabres should give Drury the Ray Emery treatment.

Quote:
Ray Emery's agent told ESPN.com on Wednesday that his client will attend training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks on a tryout basis in September.

Agent J.P. Barry told the website that Chicago will then have until Oct. 1 to sign Emery or release him.
Even if he's not physically ready it could prove useful to touch base with guy to let him know he's still wanted if he is able successfully rehab. The Sabres could even offer to assist with the rehab. Then they'll have the inside track if they want to sign him later in the season. I don't see Drury playing in the AHL other than on a conditioning assignment.

I am more than fine with this idea.

At least he'll be able to help some kids while he's here.

If Drury is going to attend training camp on a tryout basis I would think at least 3-4 teams would be interested in having it be their training camp. After all the drama when he left, any indication he'd want to come back to Buffalo?

Yeah I would be fine with that idea. I also wonder if he isn't able to rehab and come back if he is interested in coaching. I wonder if he would take an entry level coaching position with the team. Or maybe assistant in Rochester?

Considering Regier's statement, and the lack of scoring on the offense in Rochester, Drury makes sense without counting the history. The team is looking to sign vets who dont get contracts to play down there and help teach kids. Who better to teach than Drury, who is a born leader? Whether or not its likely to happen is an entirely different story.

If they're kicking the tires on ex-Sabres to hold down a spot on the farm... JP Dumont is a possible camp invitee.

Yah I saw someone mention him wondering what happened to him. Looks like he lost his scoring touch after a nasty(and absolutely dirty) hit. Hopefully it could be be rekindled in the minors. I always loved his game. Strong power forward who was never afraid to get his nose dirty. Kassian and Adam could learn a thing or two from him. A move to Rochester would put him much closer to home too. Definitely should be at the top of their list IMO.

Low-risk-high-reward move. I'm all for it.

Browsing the lists of unsigned UFA and his name stuck out -- he might have a bit left in the tank and if nothing else, could be a great replacement for Mancari's offensive game. He left a much more complete player and his charity work was outstanding locally.
