That's the thing though if Duke retires this offseason (he should) and we give the C to either Johnson or Stastny because we we don't think O'Reily are ready that means it will probably be a long long time before one of them does get it. Unless they decide to just take it away from Johnson or Stastny, which they won't appreciate. Also is Lando gets the C it means O'Reilly never will and viceversa.
If hedjy retires (which i highly doubt, hes 35) then they'll go three A's. Landy is the captain of this team in the future so you cant give it to stastny or johnson and take it away.
I was sure O'Reilly would get the C next season but it's hard to ignore how much Landeskog deserves it already. Both are ready imo. Even if Hejduk plays another season he should give up the C.
Oh, I definitely disagree with that. McClement can't be captain.
No way in hell will he ever be captain on this team but I would be ok with it if he were. Not saying its a reality. I been wanting ROR as captain for sometime. The fact he doesnt even have a letter is a travesty.
R. O'Reilly 66 16 34 1 50
G. Landesk 67 18 23 20 41
P. Stastny 64 16 25 -5 41
S. Downie 61 14 21 -8 35 M. Hejduk 66 13 21 -9 34
D. Jones 57 15 13 -3 28
J. McGinn 64 14 12 1 26
M. Duchene 47 13 13 -7 26
E. Johnson 61 4 20 -6 24
J. Hejda 66 4 12 -14 16
He's fifth on the team in scoring. Take what we can get.
He's fifth on the team in scoring, but half of his points (17) and more than half of his goals (8) came in the first two months.
Hejduk still has the hands to play on the power play - a situation when he doesn't need to be worried about being knocked off the puck - but even there he's struggled recently, missing the net on a lot of opportunities.

As clear as it is that Lando is captain material, you can't just give it to him at 19. Crosby was two months shy of being 20 when he was named captain, and even that was too early IMO, even though it's Crosby.
Either O'Reilly, or EJ will be this team's next captain, unless they bring in another vet.

I just don't see a reason why he shouldn't be captain even at such a young age. He seems to be confident enough, is usually leading by example on the ice, is well respected by teammates and opponents and he seems to enjoy dealing with the media.
I have never played a sport at a professional level, though, so maybe I'm missing an important point.
To go by just age is stupid. He is wise beyond his years. He's more mature than Statsny even. He plays hockey like he's been in the league several years. Lando deserves it.
Towes and Crosby got it at his age, and Lando will be 20 next year and the next (around) 20 yo to get it.

What's EJ really done for us to deserve a C though?

You just don't do that to young players, even if they're as mature as Landeskog. They need to be focusing on their game, not all the attention, and responsibilities that come with being captain.
And to be quite honest, he hasn't earned it yet, and I guarantee there will be a few teammates that feel the same way, even if they didn't say it. Landeskog's my favorite player on the team, and he will be a captain one day, but you have to play more than one regular season to earn the C of an NHL team.

He's gotten his game back on track now that he hasn't been concerned with being named captain, so it's a concern that it may be too soon for him next year as well.
That said, he has just as many leadership qualities as anyone else on the roster. Both in vocally with his teammates, the way he handles the media, and his on ice play. He wants to carry this team to victory.
O'Reilly likely has an edge on his though, if they wait another year for him to establish himself a bit more.
Puting age aside. Who would you want leading the franchise for the next 15 years lets say. I mean a franchise captain. IMO, when landeskog was drafted, he was portrayed as just that. For some reason i really can't explain, i have a hard time imagining anyone else but him.
