Owen Nolan to sign with the Canucks?

http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=958389

Someone on the main boards just posted this rumour that he heard. No actual source, but hypothetically if this were to happen, would you be happy with the move?

Someone else on the Sharks board posted this yesterday too.

I was surprised they didn't sign him last offseason.

Nolan scored at a 35 goal, 65 point pace in '08-09 in 59 games and has put up 10 seasons of at least 15 goals.

Definately a risk worth taking IMO. Would give the Canucks more size and nastiness, another goalscoring winger and hopefully a player that still skates well enough to make an impact come playoff time.

Worst case scenario, he can't keep up with today's fast paced game and you put him on waivers. Risk free move...

if he's this year's version of Peter Schaeffer, that's a pretty big upgrade most likely.

Meh. If we can get him for Tanner Glass money, I say give him a shot and see if he's still got anything left in the tank. Just to piss Sharks fans off.

this is a joke, right?

wish the thread didn't have the credibility of a "speculation" tag on it because all we have in terms of "speculation" is one boarder starting a thread on a different board saying "i heard from somebody" without listing a source

*****

as far as the idea of signing owen nolan, no thanks

he's 39 years old, hasn't played a full season his entire career, has only played 7 playoff games in the past decade, and wasn't able to secure an nhl contract after a "decent" 2009 season in minnesota where he scored 16 goals in 73 games...i'm not sure how much size, nastiness, and clutch goal scoring you're supposed to get from a 39-year-old with his mileage and injury history

in terms of it being no-risk and putting him on waivers ala peter schaefer...i guess, but i just fail to see the point when the gillis organizational strategy is supposed to be promoting from within and having young prospects push their way onto the team

It would depend on the contract terms for me to decide whether or not I'd be pleased. Could be a good veteran presence for the team and he's scored in the past, but being out of the NHL for a year and getting up there in age could make it a bit risky.

If by "sign" he means "invite to camp" then it makes sense.

i'd offer him a tryout, but no reason to outright sign him right away

At his age, you might not get a lot of nastiness or physicality over a long regular season - but he might be able to sustain that type of game over a playoff series or two. Nolan has that other gear that most 4th liners like Glass, Oreskovich, Bitz etc. don't have. Could be an impact player if motivated.

If there are any prospects ready to make the team they'll outplay their competition and do so. Whether that's Nolan, Bitz or Sturm.

I wouldn't mind the signing, but between this, Bitz, and Sturm I think some sort of trade is brewing. Too many bodies filling similar roles in the bottom six. Hansen, Oreskovich, + to NYI for.. ? They have a few guys that may work on the 2nd line.

500K - 600K for one year wouldn't be too bad.

I was interested in him last year, but not so much this year. I remember hearing that he signed in the Swiss league in an attempt to get back into the NHL. He then got injured at some point IIRC.

However, if he stayed in shape, the year off could have done wonders for his powerforward body. His final season with the Wild was similar to Sturm's healthy season with Boston two years ago production wise.

This is a pretty odd rumor for someone to make up though, so we'll see.

then, as others have said, invite him to camp and give him a tryout like the canucks did with brendan morrison and peter schaefer last offseason...although i'm highly skeptical of his ability to make any sort of an impact

it makes zero sense to sign him to a contract at 39 years old during the august offseason when 30 nhl teams passed on him coming off 2 years of playing soft minutes in minnesota at 38 years old

yeah. i wouldn't be overly upset if they tossed Nolan an 'invite to camp', but if they sign him, i will struggle profoundly to understand what on earth the point is. i just don't see a place for him to really make an impact in the lineup.

It would be a neat signing, especially if he plays with Kesler. Then we can enjoy the spectacle of seeing a winger so far behind his centerman that the passes have to cross at least one timezone.

Interesting. I'll reserve judgement as I have no clue what to expect from Nolan at this point and don't know $$$ figures

I don't care how soft your minutes are if you're scoring at a 35 goal, 63 point pace over three quarters of a season - as a 37 year old.

I'll believe he's finished when I see it with my own eyes. Until then, I'd give a guy with 10 straight 15+ goal seasons the benefit of the doubt. If you're going to take a $2.5mil risk on Sturm how do you not with Nolan if he comes in at close to one fifth the cost?

He very well could flop. And it wouldn't hurt us in the least if he did.

Edit- The last time Nolan played in the playoffs was '07-08 with the Flames. That year he averaged just over a hit per game in the regular season and stepped up the physicality in the playoffs with 17 hits in 7 games. There's that extra gear...
