What ever happened to Mike York?

I remember he was a fan favorite on the Rangers (One of my favorite scratchy voiced players those couple years) and then he was traded.

Dont remember if it was York for Poti or Savard for Poti. Anyways..

What ever became of him. You never hear about him and I guess he didnt light up the league like most Rangers fans thought.

Can anyone tell me EXACTLY what happened to him ?

Traded to the Oilers for Poti, played there a few seasons, bounced around between some Euro League, a couple of NHL teams and the AHL. I think he's back overseas again right now.

But yeah, when he was here, he was definitely one of my favorites, him and Fleury. They were really fun to watch together, he just never had the same success elsewhere I guess.

Thank you for the information.

Maybe the Rangers should offer him a try-out this camp and see if he can find his magic with the team? Some players just play better for certain teams.

I kid I kid. Although I wouldnt be upset if he DID get a try-out. I mean, its ONLY a try-out.

Holy Shnykies! I dont remember him a ISLANDER! WTF?!

I never would have guessed he played in so many different teams.

I loved the kid, although listening to his interviews it was like nails on a chalkboard.

Well, I am happy he is playing somewhere and hopefully happy. Here is one big fan of his.

I would honestly not at ALL be upset about this. Give him some good linemates that make space for him and he pocketed almost 60 points the season he played with Lindros and Fleury. I just always liked his style, if he wasn't over the hill in hockey years, I'd be for it, and hope he could put up decent second line LW numbers. Ah, pipe-dreams.

I have a friend who worked for the Islanders - apparently York spent a little too much time at Mulcahy's and the like during his tenure there.

Mike York is one of the most overhyped, overrated players we've had in recent memory. He had a decent run. IMO, Sather and company saw a hole in this guy's personality and dumped him before the wheels came off the wagon. It proved to be true, because team after team cut him loose after they traded him. We bought him low and sold him at the absolute peak of his value, which is exactly the way way you are supposed to manage your assets, yet the deal gets killed on these boards like this guy wouldnt have turned into an uninterested, out of shape floater who mailed it in on a nightly basis had he only remained a Ranger.

Yeah. Instead, we had a useless 6'4 pansy Purse Swinging Poti on defense.

Wow, thats an absolutely amazing proclamation considering the gems that have come through here in the last 15 years.

Poti was just another in a long line of defenseman scapegoats for this fanbase. He wasnt half as bad as some make it out to be.

exactly.. i just remember not in and night out constantly every time he touched the puck he felt the wrath. you could even tell he got real nervous when the puck touched his stick he knew he would **** it up. ok maybe not worst but deff top 5. just another reason to be thankful the dark age has passed us and hopefully we dont have to endure that again.

If I remember correctly York always slumped second half of the year..He was traded because they thought he was too fragile/weak..He just ran out of steam past game 45 or so..

Poti was fine. Never deserved the hate he received. That's just how we treat defensemen though.

Eh, Poti did suck, but he wasn't as bad as people made him out to be. I'll take Poti over Gomez.

York, I don't get. He was a hardworking player when he was here. Afterwards...not so much. He hustled when he was with the Rangers.

1)- Rangers fans hated Poti because he had a big frame but played like a male Nurse

2)- Mike York DESERVED his fanfare because he played hard while he was here. He was a very young "kid" who did well with the Rangers and the fans were clamoring for a young prospect who could score and was not a hyped up overaged ex-star/free agent signing. We were DYING for some young blood on the team. For years and years we were statistically close to the highest team in terms of age. We were the crutch-line. Every line was old.

If you look back and think you did not like Mike York, chances you didnt watch him play or you were too young to realize what we had. Yes the Rangers cut bait on him but the rangers were looking for a big offensive defenseman and thought they found that with Tom Poti. Did it work? No neither player played well for their respective teams. Actually, Yorkie played well for his team but not enough to stick around.

Mike York gave me new hope and something new to cheer for and be excited about. I'm not joking, when he stepped on the ice, I paid more attention. Especially amongst the "crutch" players we had spotted throughout the lineup.

I was disappointed when he was traded, and I never understood why he just trailed off.

I've been watching since 1985. I saw pretty much every game Mike York ever played in a Rangers sweater. I spotted what IMO, turned out to be true about him for the rest of his career by the second season. The kid came out of the gate like gangbusters, and was out of gas by the all star break. That is maybe acceptable in season one, but after season two, it raises a red flag as a conditioning issue. The fact about that era of Rangers hockey, should you be old enough to remember it clearly, is that we were starving for somebody, ANYBODY, to come out of our system. We filled out our rosters with hired guns every summer, then wondered why they had no loyalty to each other. So I think we, as a fan base and as an organization, overhyped and overvalued any homegrown prospect who cracked the roster. We forced Malhotra on to the roster. We threw Blackburn to the wolves long before his time. We ruined many of our draft picks. So along comes York, with a decent skill level and a nose for the net, and we put him on the top line with Fleury and Lindros. Well, who do you think was going to be the open man most times out of those three? York. The FLY line had some decent success, and York makes the US olympic team. Absolute peak of value right there. I believe Sather saw the chance to get something for him before he fell off completely and moved on him. People forget that Poti was a young player who had pretty good upside at the time. For some reason people look at this trade with hindsight as to what Poti became and not York. Poti was not a perfect player by any stretch. I didn't even like the guy. But at least he was an NHL level player and not a flash in the pan guy. Because if you ask fans of every other team York played for what they thought of him, theyre going to tell you he was a lazy cream puff and a waste of a roster spot, not some guy they're all wishing never left.

He was a serviceable defenseman. Yes, he wasn't as physical as we'd have liked him to be, and yes, he didn't shoot the puck enough, but he really wasn't a bad defenseman.

The guy is going to play in 1000 games (or close) for his career. He's a fine player.
