Hey RS would you mind writing s detailed report on Siemens and his progress this year and where he might be projected in the avs lineup in the future??
Siemens was the guy i wanted at 11, but with me only being able to check out the OHL I haven't been able to see him with my own eyes and I know your the guy that could give me the best report..
I know the basic scouting report on Siemens but thats about it. Big defenseman who is a very good skater for his size, plays with a mean streak and isn't afraid to stand up for his team mates. In my head after looking up his stats and his scouting report Brayden Coburn is who I first think of, is this accurate ? Higher or lower potential?
How is his hockey sense/ ability to read the ice and move the puck out of the zone? Shot/ ability to get the puck on the net? What are his bests strengths/flaws ?
I just have so many questions and if you could just help me out with a few of them it would be greatly appreciated .
I was pretty pleased with his growth this year, especially in regards to his decision making. It was likely his biggest weakness last season and he really improved. Often he held on to the puck too long or just made the wrong decision with it. This year it was better, although some of those problems showed up slightly in the playoffs, which is concerning.
You pretty much nailed in regards to his physical tools. He's big and actually is probably now bigger than the 6'3 he's listed at. Probably closer to 6'4 now. Still an amazing skater and that's his biggest strength.
I would have liked to see more points on the board this year, even though his numbers last season were definitely inflated by playing on an amazing offensive club and being partnered with the top offensive blueliner in the dub last year (Elliott). He shot the puck more and it was an area that was much improved, with it being harder and more accurate. When he joined the rush, you could see how much it changed the complexion of the game. It's pretty hard to slow a guy like him down when he's breaking down the middle of the slot, creating havoc. I wish he did it more.
Going forward, I see him as a lock to be a top 3 guy for us. Ideally, he would be a great fit with a guy like Erik Johnson. Both are big, physical, can skate, can pass, have hard shots and can provide offense. I think EJ will definitely be head and shoulders above Siemens when it comes to overall ability, but they would be a tough as **** pairing to go up against.
If he's not with EJ, him with Elliott on the second pairing would be great to see. They played together in junior and it would be a good fit at the NHL level.
As far as comparisons go, the best one I have is Barret Jackman. A leader, physical, good first pass and just a terribly mean SOB on the blueline. Siemens is a better skater and will likely have more offensive ability (Jackman only has a career high of 27 pts). But, when looking at junior numbers, they are very similar and Jackman was actually selected 19th overall out of the WHL in '99, so they've very comparable in that regard.
I'm expecting even more growth next season. It was up and down this year for him, his first as a captain as a VERY young 18 year old player. With another year under his belt, he should continue to grow his game. I also expect him to make some noise and create some buzz with his physical play in Avs camp next fall. He told me this year that when he played his one exhibition game with the Avs earlier in 2011, he actually almost fought Ryan Reaves of the Blues. I would expect something similar next fall.
Those are my thoughts after the season.

Likely still top 15, even if it is a D heavy draft, more so than last year.

More as a showing of willingness than anything else, or is he tougher than I thought? From what I've seen he would get slaughtered by Reaves, or is it just because he hasn't been fighting much this year. I was very impressed by how Gudbranson has handled himself in fights this year, could we expect similar from Siemens in a couple years?

I think he is tougher than you think. From the videos of Siemens' fights he looks like he can really throw them. And after personally seeing Gudbranson I would say Siemens' is fully capable of throwing them in the NHL. But Siemens played a much bigger role for the blades this year. Last year he was able to fight a lot because he was 17 and wasn't as valuable to the team as he was this year. Don't take that the wrong way, but Siemens this year was the captain and an extremely important player for the Blades. No team wants a player like that in the box for 5 minutes. I expect Siemens to throw the gloves more frequently as a pro if need be. In his interview after the Avs took him I remember him saying he would be willing to step up for his teammates whenever need be.
RS, your post is greatly appreciated, I wish Siemens the best of luck and I hope he continues to progress with his development. The kid has all the tools it sounds like and I hope he can put them all together. Next year is huge for Siemens, and I hope he takes full advantage of it Memorial Cup host, possible World junior championships could be an extremely big year for him.
Siemens is a willing fighter but it's definitely not a huge strength of his. He's above average, but I don't expect him to ever be a legit heavy at the NHL level.
He will fight, and he will win many, but he won't be a guy that totally dominates scraps.
As for the Reeves thing, it was more about him just getting super frustrated by him and wanting to prove that he can take on any customer. He's young and is definitely a bit immature in that regard to his game.
I agree with RS, Reeves would totally manhandle him. That's very good to hear his shot is getting better, because it was pretty weak last training camp.

Yeah, this was basically the impression I had of him. Hypothetical, who wins in a fight between Siemens and Thrower?
I think he can enter the import draft in the CHL, but I'm not sure. He could be loaned to some ECHL team as well.
I think he can just sign with a CHL team, might be too old for the Import Draft, but I don't know anything about the rules. He as drafted in the KHL Draft by CSKA so he can go to Russia for a season. A lot of Finnish fans during the WJC were saying he should just stay in Finland for another season or two. I personally agree with another season or transfer him over to a CHL team.
Patterson and Pickard are probably going to be signed and based on play and plans will either be both in the AHL or one/one in ECHL/AHL.
Joachim Nermark won the Swedish U20 championship today as Linköping defeated HV71 3-2 in a close game that was decided in OT. Nermark went 1+4 in 6 games (that's the whole playoff.... yes, it's that short) and was one of the key players for Linköping.

Good to hear. I have high hopes for Nermark, I like my Swedes.

I don't have any hopes at all when it comes to Nermark. To me he feels like another Johan Alcén, a player that dominates in the Swedish junior leagues but simply can't cut it in SEL. Nermark even failed to produce in the Swedish second division Allsvenskan, he did get very limited minutes though. I would prefer if Avs stayed away from making late Swedish draft picks, we don't have a Håkan Andersson and our Swedish scout Anders Carlsson isn't a guy I trust when it comes to scouting.

Can't disagree. The Avs European scouting leaves much to be desired.

I don't think the avs still hold his rights but an injury free Jens Hellgren finally showed what he's capable of this season. Six goals, 15 assists, and being +2 in 50 games with his new team Mora IK.
