-If we get a top 4 defenseman
-If Tavares emerges as the star that he will be
-If Streit returns to all star form
-If we have a goalie that steps up
-If we stay healthy

We will make the playoffs.

However realistically I expect Tavares to emerge as a star, and 1 or 2 more of those things happening. We are still another year away from really contending for the playoffs IMO. I say we finish anywhere from 8-11. I say we finish #10.

For them to make the playoffs it's going to be a race like last season where you have the spots of 6th to 13th all in the race for those 3 playoff spots. and those teams would be New York Rangers, Islanders, Sabres, Devils, Habs, Leafs, Jets and Carolina with possibly the Sens also.

They need to add a dman to solidify the 6.

all isles fans are still expecting snow to trade for a legit top-4 dman as he said he would....right now these are our dmen that will have a spot or will be contending for a spot

1. Streit
2. Macdonald
3. Hamonic
4. Jurcina
5. Eaton
6. DeHaan
7. Wishart
8. Mottau

Hopefully after the trade our d pairings will look like:

Streit-FA
Hamonic-Macdonald
Eaton-Jurcina

With Dehaan and Wishart being call ups for inevitable injuries...in due time Dehaan will take a permanent spot in the lineup

Assuming they keep Hamonic and Macdonald together?

Streit-Jurcina (probably)

Amac-Hamonic

two of a number of guys (Guessing Eaton-Mottau but this is probably going to change)

Heres a link with a list of Isles D-men and prospects for them to consider

http://www.lighthousehockey.com/2011...the-2011-draft

This is all assuming they dont get a top-4 DMAN via trade of course...

Its a tough decision. Do you put someone like Eaton or Jurcina with Streit? and Have 2 good pairings? Or do you put Streit with Macdonald or Hamonic, and make for one very good pairing, and a below average second pairing. I assume that Capuano will want to keep Hamonic with one of Macdonald or Streit, but he probably isn't ready for top line minutes on a regular basis yet.

They really need another top 4 defenseman.

Oh, sorry...I forgot that you added Tim Connolly as your 1st-line center.
Geez, if we replaced players that we shipped out at the deadline in the summer, who was there while they were winning?

Do you subscribe to the Maple Leafs Time-machine theory? Maybe we can replace someone with Parise next summer but have him contribute by January.

There is no hance in hell they're better then; PIT, WSH, TBL, MON, NYR, BUF, NJD, BOS, PHI.

That's 9 teams, and there are still arguably 2-3 teams that I think are better. So no, I think they have a slim-none chance at the playoffs.

Both teams have a decent chance at making it. The Devils have more stability in the organization that might allow for it over the Islanders, but the potential for the Islanders to score a lot of goals + play a nasty, physical game puts their chances up there.

With that said, you don't just go from 13th to playoffs in the blink of an eye. Add to that the confusion with DP in net, how Nabokov will look after this time off, + transgression of the younger players, it's very hard to predict where the Isles will fall.

Which is why anyone "betting" anything is foolish. But this is the land of armchair GM's, so I understand.

Tavares is going to be a stud this year. Without Milbury you guys are going to be a fun team to watch for 5-10 years at least.

Islanders had a streak where they lost 20 of 21 games early in the season, if they were able to win half of those they would have finished the season with 93 points. The same 93 points that the Rangers finished with for the 8th seed. So it is not a surprise for them to be a sleeper team because if they get rid of that big losing streak this season they could be contending for a playoff spot

No way they make it there are too many good teams in the east for a mediocre NYI team to make it, maybe next year.

If Tavares scores 40 goals and 90 points, the Islanders might make it to 10th in the conference.

Honestly, a goaltending core of Nabokov, Montoya and Dipietro is terrible. That will eventually be their downfall, I don't see them getting close to the playoffs. They need to wait for Poulin to devolop and not rush him and in 2012/2013, they will be competing.

Well, it's a good thing playoffs aren't determined by paper and in the offseason.

I'd say:

Streit-Eaton
Hamonic-MacDonald
Jurcina-Mottau
Wishart

Garth said he will look for a dman via trade so that dman will push Eaton back with Jurcina and then slide in next to Streit.

It won't come down to what Tavares does, it will come down to having a lot less injuries and Montoya replicating his performance from last year.

Kaberle and Liles are not identical players Similiar? Yes, but Liles will add a different dimension to the team and you if you really believe Franson is replacing Beauchemin then you're out to lunch and simply don't have a clue.

The document didn't load for me either but I think it was Kevin Allen who wrote it and I'm going to have to disagree with him. Isles D and G are so thin, I suspect they will have a lot of trouble again this year. I don't think Grabner scores at a 35G+ pace either.

I agree with Allen when he says the Blues are the sleeper team in the West though. They actually have some depth in all the positions

based on what happened to the devils last season any of those teams could just fall apart

and i really dont see how the flyers are still considered a lock for the playoffs, they pretty much replaced carter and richards for schenn and couterier
