A single stanley Cup :)

Back in 1995 Dallas traded Prospect Iginla for Nieuwendyk.

and then win the cup, was it a right move or a mistake ?

This introduction bring me to the question im asking you now: if acquiring a future UFA at the deadline could Guarantee you at 100% your team would win the cup by the end of the year.

How much of your current team/future would you be willing to sacrifice to get the cup.

Is there a line to be draw ? Or a team should go all-in and trade as much as possible for it ?

So the question come in two part:

1 - What would you currently be willing to offer as the GM of your current team to assure you a cup ?.

2 - Lets imagine you could trade a cup, for future years being the worst team in the league. How many future years spend as a painfully mediocre 30th overall team would you be willing to trade for the cup ?

The entire point of the NHL is to win the Stanley Cup, they won one. How can it be argued that it was a bad move?

Definitely, it only takes a few years to rebuild anyway.

I'd deal anything

I'd trade Giroux and JVR for Brent Sopel if it meant we won the cup the same year or next.

The whole team, followed by a season with entirely scabs and a long, wholesale rebuild... but of course, there are never any guarantees, which is why GMs of contenders try to find a happy medium between mortgaging and holding on to assets, since you never have such a guarantee.

What is the primary goal? To win the game. /W.O.P.R.

As a Red Wings fan, I would not trade a cup for a 30th place finish. Ken Holland does things the right way. Morgating the future/present to stock up on high draft picks in a form of welfare (aka Penguins/Bhawks) has never been impressive to me.

If I was guaranteed to win a cup if I traded Nazem Kadri, Luke Schenn, Phil Kessel and Nikolai Kulemin for Paul Bissonnette I'd do it.

A cup is the ultimate goal - a guarantee of winning it is worth any and every player.

C'mon, you have a Cup win, a Super Bowl win, and a World Series appearance in the last decade! Let us poor Buffalo fans get at least 1 major championship first

In the last 21 years (God, it's been that long since Wide Right) we get 4 straight SB losses and a Cup loss, 2 of which were in the most agonizing ways

That said, I would trade anything for a Sabres Cup win as well. (Not quite there for a Bills playoff appearance, though it's been since 99-00 since Music City Miracle for them)

Any trade is retroactively justified if the team that made it wins a Cup shortly afterward.

I think people are missing something in this hypothetical situation. Some teams are legitimate long term contenders. Would it be worth it for those teams to gut their team for one cup when they could win multiples cups (although not guaranteed). One guaranteed cup and then a horrible team does not beat a true contender for a decade.

I dont agreee with this. This is a logic fallacy

There is luck involved in winning a cup.

Does the winner of the lottery did a better decision than everyone else in his choice number?

Is his decision retroactively justified because he is the one who won it?

I know we cant compare sports and lottery

But when the outcome of a decision can be affected by a luck factor, the outcome can not justify the rightness of a decision. We have to judge the decision if its right when its made and not by the consequence.

Would you rather give a future decision to someone that did a bad decision in the past that turned right, or someone who did the right decision that turned wrong? We have to go with the odds, in the long term, the right decision will reward.

In the Iginla example, let say Calgary gave the option to Gainey to give them 3 first choice instead of Iginla, but gainey choose to give Iginla instead.

Was his decision right because he win the Cup ?
Was his decision wrong because iginla become iginla ?

Both these outcome are irrelevant.

Gainey did the right choice because at the time of the trade, The odds was that Inginla would not not become greater than 3 future 1st round.
The odds was that Nieuwendyk would improve their chance to win the cup enough to justify the lost of a prospect.

No but he's the exception to the rule as he's a once in a generation talent. Other than Sidney I would trade anyone if it gave my team the best chance to win the cup.

I'd give up my first born child for Calgary to win another cup before Iggy retires.

Would you agree to a deal that guarantees you the cup next season, but the team gets relocated shortly afterwards?

The Stanley cup iis the holy grail of hockey. Sacrifices need to be made in order to achieve greatness. Preseason kaberle gets a ryan malone orr a slumping devin setogucci, with the grail in sights he brings in two firrst and a second for 23 games. He definitely wasn't the reason boston won buut you gotta takke a gamble to have success.
