Dunno why we need to give him a guaranteed contract, thats all.
whaaaa? Is it not a 2 way deal where he will spend likely the entire time in the AHL?

The Whale has 5 veteran players. Redden,Bell,Mitchell,Thuresson and Newbury. More than 260 and 320 games. Fits the rules. 12 skaters of less than 320 games. 11 skaters. 260 games or less. 1 skater. 320 games or less.

Yes, but it is a contract nonetheless. We already have Redden in the AHL, not sure what the point of this is, at least that wouldn't be solved just as easily with a veteran tryout.

Fans are always up in arms when teams sign career minor leaguers, but most organizations do it. He's an extra body you can call up in a pinch, if you need a 7th D-man. Also, minor league teams without adequate veteran leadership are usually dreadful, which is not a good environment for player development.
Valentenko has only played 2 pro seasons. He missed two seasons when he skipped out on his contract. What type of value does a player have when he already bailed once and can become a free agent in the summer only to run to the KHL again? What has Valentenko proven?

I guess just not very concerned it would hurt them in anyway. Another warm body to push the kids.

This guy doesnt stink he's just proved to not be full time NHL caliber when he got a chance

The way some Ranger fans carry on about Valentenko and Pashnin, you would think they were the next Malakhov and Kasparaitis who made the jump directly from the Unified team to the NHL?

Well, Malakhov and Kasparaitis were mostly crap as Rangers. Valentenko could be a solid Ranger if he ever gets the chance. He's earned it. Is he an All-Star in the making? Probably not, but he's nothing to scoff at. He's a pretty good defensive player, physical and he hits like a truck. He's really strong, deceptively, the way a guy like Fedotenko is. Not much offensively, but he has a rocket of a shot. Not a bad third-pairing option.

So, you mean it's another mistake? Look I don't know the reasoning behind it, but obviously the Ranger organization wants him in the system. Does it mean anything at this point? Not really.

Malakhov and Kasparaitis as Islanders in 92-93 when the Islanders beat the Caps and then upset the 2 time Cup champs. Not them as Rangers.

I'm not saying that Valentenko is any kind of lock to make it in the NHL, but he played very well in the Whale last season, and I don't think he has anything left to prove at that level. At age 24, I'm sure he knows that it's make or break time for him. If he's sent back to the Whale, it'll signal to him that the Rangers don't see him as an NHL caliber defenseman. I think he'd rather bolt to Europe at that point, even if it means the end of his NHL dreams. In that case, the Rangers might be willing to deal him rather than lose him.

I wouldn't expect a lot in return, but as with the Brodie Dupont or Dane Byers trades, I expect some organization would be willing to take a flyer on him in exchange for a Kolarik or Thuresson type, or a late round draft pick.

Valentenko is waiver-eligible, i'd count in him making the team unless he is no good in camp.

The Rangers can't call up Redden in an emergency because his contract will mean a $6.5 million cap hit (or whatever it is). They probably aren't comfortable with Kundratek (possibly) being the only other NHL ready call up. Even if the Rangers had a veteran tryout in camp, they'd have to sign him to keep him.

He is not waiver-eligible.

Just ask RangerBoy. Very complicated **** that I can't remember, but I know he's not waiver eligible.

Newbury and Bell were teammates before maybe that had something to do with it.

Even 2 way contracts are considered guaranteed.

i actually remember this guy. he played for the syracuse crunch a few years ago and had a decent year. hes an offensive type guy with a decent shot and some passing skills.

i saw quite a few games and noticed him as a decent ahl dman.

i think he left and signed with avangard omsk last year in the k.

not sure why we would sign him. hartford depth guy at best.

lol it is true though, Pashin was a 7th round pick who is way down on the depth chart. He'll also be 24 when his KHL deal is done so its not crazy to see him back in the organization.

Valentenko is NHL ready its just a matter if the NYR have a spot for him with all the depth. I think he deserves a spot but at best he's a 5/6 D while his competition DZ and Erixon can be top 4

To echo Vitto, the Tank is NHL ready. He will light up the AHL this year and will net AT LEAST 10 goals.
