Filatov's numbers to justify the trade

As you all know, we traded the 66th pick in this year's draft for Filatov. I think we all agree its a very low risk, potentially high reward trade. But what kind of numbers (offensive and otherwise) do you think Filatov would need to put up this year to justify the trade? (Note: This assumes that he plays most of the year on Spezza's wing, likely with Michalek or Butler on the other wing).

To Justify the trade (being as it is a 3rd round pick).. I would not give numbers but he needs to be a solid 3rd line guy to justify the trade.

However if he is playing on Spezza's wing I would expect around 20-25 goals and 20-25 assists (assuming he is there all year)

As long as he responds to Maclean, works hard and shows chemistry with his teammates he could get 30-40 points and ill be more then happy with the trade. Filatov is still young, he will have room to grow within our franchise.

I don't expect Filatov to put up big numbers, and he has not officially even earned a spot on the roster yet. I doubt he will see much first line time unless michalek gets injured. 10-15 goals and around 20 assists in 70 games if he plays on the second line is what I expect.

You can justify the trade without him putting up any numbers.

He has to be a better player than anyone from the 2011 draft picked from 66th to 96th.

by the end of the year i hope we can look back and say that the kid deserved to be a top-6 forward almost every night, played like one, and showed progress and a willingness to compete. if we can say that this time next year, i think we should be happy with the trade.

Well put. I'm as much looking for effort and attitude vs. numbers. More like Alfie, less like Kovalev.

If he plays 70 games then the trade is a win

That would just be unfortunate.

But Tynan is a guy I'm going to follow closely as a prospect out of curiosity.

Count me in on the effort and will to play and compete comments. I hope he plays a good 2-way game too, and doesn't just focus on offense.

I think you have to put him on Spezza's wing to give him a decent chance to succeed. He is not going to do that (in all likelihood) with Regin, Da Costa, or even Zibby (at first) as his center.

IMO, I think, at least to start the year, our top line should be Filatov, Spezza, and Butler (Spezza and Butler showed some chemistry last year).

Has to play in the NHL to justify trade. If your 3rd round picks make the NHL, that's a good pick.

if he turns into Marcu Naslund it would be an aboslute robbery for the franchise - the Pens gave up on naslund and he became a god in Vancouver and found a second life - - if Filatov turns into Antoine Vermette style it would be good -If Filatov turns into a regular NHL'er it's a steal.

Unless Filatov does not play in Ottawa this year or there is a metldown and bad press, the tarde will be even.

double?

Why base the value of the trade on 1 years worth of production to justify it?

Hehas to out career Tynan.

Um, no he doesn't have to out career Tynan. What the Jackets did with the pick is none of our business. He has to out career the average 3rd rounder, which he probably has already done. Even if Tynan turns into the next Crosby, it's still a good move.

All I'll say is; ''if'' he comes in with the right attitude, works his tail off, and finds some chemistry with Spezza.....he has the potential to do far better then a 25-25 season.

Big ''ifs'' though

If you can get a prospect with Filatov's talent in the third round, you take it and run. There's no justification needed, because if he was drafted in that spot, he'd be considered the steal of the draft.

Even if he busts, I wouldn't even be remotely upset. It's a 3rd round pick, especially when you consider Prince was basically a 3rd round pick.

Bullseye, you win 10 points. Alfie could be a good mentor for this kid.

Exactly.

The only person I've read that uses this word "justification", is Bruce Garrioch.

As long as he plays in North America (be it AHL or NHL) and shows sign of improvement (doesn't have to be big numbers, he's young enough that he should be improving constantly) it'll be a win for Ottawa.

If he survives this year on the top 9 without being completely bashed, then I think it's a robbery.
