Vancouver-Carolina Talks

Quote:
This just in from a source out west.

It looks like the hurricanes may be willing to part with a "star player" for "a different positional star player" off of Vancouver's roster.

The canucks were talking to NJ, but for now it looks like Carolina is "much more of an active participant.

In before "Ballard for Ruutu."

I don't see Ballard being needed by Carolina, since they already have a plethora of defenders that play a similar style.

And doesn't Carolina need Ruutu a bit more now that Cole is gone? Or will an impact kid replace him?

I'm assuming Ruutu wants an even bigger deal than Cole when he's a UFA, hence the potential for movement there. But that's just an assumption.

Meanwhile, the Canucks may miss Ballard now that Ehrhoff is gone. Can't rely on Salo for a full season these days. (or ever)

Eklund is always vague, but sometimes he nails it. In the meantime, another Canadian hockey market gets something to blabber about during the dog days of summer.

The only star player on the Hurricanes I would want (aside from Skinner but there's no way they trade someone like Jeff Skinner a year after he was runner up for the Calder after being drafted with a top 10 pick) would be Eric Staal. Except he makes way too high of a cap hit.

No thank you.

Kesler for LaRose. Hurricanes get a decent second line center, Canucks get a star winger who could possibly score 35 points playing with the Sedins.

This seems fair for both sides.

If a trade happens it won't be any star players.. The best you'll see are Raymond or Ruutu type players... That trade could make sense as well. Raymond is a RFA after his current deal and is a longer term asset than Ruutu, who's better, in his prime but a short-term asset. Canucks want to get bigger, grittier and have lots of speed to compensate.. Raymond is one of the fastest players in the game and has produced, considering his age still has upside, is solid defensively and on the PK but brings no grit or toughness at all. If the Canes are looking to get faster a fit is there.

I agree with the other poster. Do not seem to be likely trading partners. Maybe trading bottom 6 player for 2nd/3rd pairing defense men, but hardly for star players.

Sigh... If only the Canes still had Anton Babchuk. The return would've been Kesler, Burrows and the Sedins.

What a blown opportunity. But at least the stupid old jokes are there.

And now that he weighs a buck-ten, he'll be even faster.

You were serious?

What would lead you to believe LaRose would play with the Sedins?

I pretty much agree with this; it seems like both teams are set on defense, and could use a bit more depth in the top six. Seems like they'd be after the same thing.

It would go something like this...

Vigneault: Guys, you're playing with Chad today.

Sedins (in unison): We're playing with Chad today... that's a good thing.

I wouldn't. I would much rather have Luongo over Cam Ward.

Actually I do.

1) Ward is way overrated for his one playoff run as a rookie (in which, had his name been Luongo he would have been ripped apart still).

2) Eric Staal is a great player, but for the Canucks at $8.25M cap hit he just doesn't fit.

"He's one of those guys that everybody likes to play with," Coach Paul Maurice said. "He's excited about playing. He's going to go work his butt off, so he's going to make you look good. He gives you chances to score. He's going to compete and say a few funny things on the bench. ... As we're moving the lines around, 'Guys, you're playing with Chad today,' (the reaction is), 'All right, I'm playing with Chad today - that's a good thing."'

Is this an extended joke or something?

LaRose is a fairly solid third liner similar to Hansen, but he's 29 years old and seems to have maxed out at 30 points. His +/- was also horrendous last year, even by Carolina standards.
