Hockey Prospectus: Top 10 Senators Prospects

Hockey Prospectus released their list of the top-10 Sens prospects today.
http://www.hockeyprospectus.com/arti...articleid=1039

1. David Rundblad, Defense
2. Mika Zibanejad, Left Wing
3. Nikita Filatov, Right Wing
4. Stephane Da Costa, Center
5. Jared Cowen, Defense
6. Jakob Silfverberg, Right Wing
7. Patrick Wiercioch, Defense
8. Derek Grant, Left Wing
9. Matt Puempel, Left Wing
10. Robin Lehner, Goaltender

Also interesting to note, they rated the Sens as having the 4th best prospect pool in the league.

LOTS of info in the link, it's a nice read during a hockey-starved August.

It certainly is interesting to see a different view.

Likes Da Costa a lot, but has little time for Lehner. I have seen Grant's name a few times w.r.t. being underrated, but he has to do well in Bingo this year to make some noise.

Cowen at 5 and Lehner at 10???

Hard to take seriously when they are this far off on two of the top 3 prospects.

Add in the fact that they have Detroit as having the #1 system overall? Very puzzling.

Has Filatov ever played right wing in his career?

This site rates Sens prospects 4th in the league. Red Wings ended up being first somehow.

I don't understand how you could think that the Red Wings prospect stable isn't anything but top-5, at the very least.

Jarnkrok, Tatar, Smith, Nyquist, Pulkkinen, Jurco, Sheahan, Mursak, Axelsson, Ferraro, Nestrasil, Almqvist...

There's so much depth in that organization, they're going to be a top-tier team for the next decade. And it's such a nice mix of grit & skill. Deadly. They lack #1 overall name-recognition, but I'd take Detroit's prospect system over almost everyone else's in the league.

My biggest fear as a Sens fan right now is next offseason, when the league does it's inevitable divisional/conference realignment (getting the Jets out of the Southeast, solving the Phoenix thing, etc...), and seeing the Red Wings move not only to the Eastern Conference, but directly in our division.

Yeah, 9 is high, but not by a ton. They're top-15 in the league.

If by top 15, you mean #1, then I agree.

I think Lehner should have been rated higher than 10 (ahead of Grant for sure), but looking at the full quote...

Quote:
He has a few kinks to adjust to still in the North American game, like reading the play behind his net better and avoiding falling too far back into his crease.
I'd say that's pretty accurate. I don't know why you'd deny that a 19 year old goalie still needs to work on some technical parts of his game.

I didnt really look at the organizational rankings and the way he ranks his players is different, theres a formula, I'm not too sure about it but

I found his individual player descriptions pretty good

Saying Lehner at best will be an average starter is just wrong.

Really?.....that's what I'm really hoping for when the conference realignment occurs. There is no better measuring stick in the league then the Detroit Red Wings. We'll just have to focus on being that much better with the bar set even higher.

To be the best, you must beat the best.

I'd rather beat the best in a 7-game series for the cup than have to face them 6 times a year during the regular season, and face the possibility of playing them early in the playoffs in a series that, even if we won, would leave us so drained that we'd be easy fodder in the next round.

I guarantee you there are 14 teams in the west just DROOLING at the thought of only having to play the Wings twice a year.

If you look at all his projections, they're all pretty tempered. No one wants to be the guy to oversell a prospect as that's all they are - prospects.

Why is everyone so ******** about this list? His description of the players is quite accurate and Lehner at 10 makes sense as he's ONLY 19 and still has a long way to go before he's NHL ready.

If you look at the prospects above him, they could very well be playing a regular role in the NHL before he does. Especially with Anderson as our starter. The club has made it clear they aren't going to rush their blue-chip prospect.

No way Detroit moves to the East. They are the biggest draw in the NHL on the road (selling at a 99.9% capacity average in each arena they go to) and Western teams need them to sell tickets more than the Eastern teams do.

I fully believe it will be Nashville or Columbus that makes the move over. Columbus apparently has been lobbying hard to be slotted with Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
