Advertising on Uniforms?

European hockey teams put advertising on their uniforms in order to generate additional revenue. Would you be okay with NHL teams doing this?

Everybody's friend, Bob McCowan, says it's only a matter of time before this happens.

This topic comes up pretty frequently. The answer is no. Can you imagine the NHL defacing the jerseys of the Montréal Canadiens or the Toronto Maple Leafs or the Chicago Blackhawks or any team, for that matter? It would be a real shame.

NO

Teams don't "need" revenue. They want it.

I would not support the Birchwood Automotive Group Jets in any rivalry with the Rexall Oilers.

The Montreal Molson Canadiens vs the Toronto Teachers Fund Maple Leafs sort of has a need ring to it.

Sure, just keep it on the pants. Preparation H on the back, and Viagra on the front would be perfectly appropriate.

never, it's just not something that's done in north american sports, even cash strapped leagues barely do it, that's not how it works over here

I hope not. CFL teams have two adds on the front of the jersey and it just ruins it. I'm pretty sure if you buy a CFL authentic jersey it comes with the adds on it. Who the heck would wNt to wear that?

I voted No... BUT if there comes a time when teams need it to remain viable then absolutely. I would rather cheer for the Jets wearing KFC themed uni's then not have a team to cheer for.

Winnipeg Golden Arches. Yellow and red unis and the logo could be like the Sharks except it'd be the roninator biting through a stick!!

I should be in advertising.

It better never happen.

I was in Toronto recently, and saw some jerseys for their soccer team for sale at the airport. Of course, I had NO idea they were anything other than Bank of Montreal advertising until I saw the teeny tiny Toronto FC logo over the heart.

It's disgusting. Visually and morally.

You've obviously never watched a professional soccer game in the past 30 years. And its morally disgusting? Minor hockey teams have always had team sponsers and often it would be on a jersey. That's morally disgusting to you? Or is it only morally disgusting when a professional sports team tries making money (since thats what business' do) by selling ad space on a shirt

NHL and the whole NA already has much more advertising. Yeah, not in the jerseys. But it's kinda sad when even the offsides and icings belong to some freakin hamburger company. It's very annoying to be in a NHL hockey game or watch it from tv because of all the things they're trying to sell to you all the time. But I guess that's just the way it is in NA.

Na. It's the culture of soccer. Fully accepted by fans. The morally thing I don't understand here. This isn't letting people starve in Africa.

Soccer teams around the world use advertising as their main logos.

I should have added a wink after morally. To ME, it's 'morally' ()disgusting to disgrace the logo of my favourite team with an ad. I'm not opposed to advertising, I'm not one of those anti-business people. I just have pride in the sweater, and have never like the minor/Euro approach to advertising.

And sorry, I don't watch soccer. I like watching goals, not passing. (Seriously, I have respect for the sport, it's just not for me).

I used to hate soccer for the same reason you say, not enough goal scoring. I've really fell in love with it over the past couple of years (especially having seen MLS games live in Cali and Chitown)

And for the record, I really don't hate soccer - just never appealed to me. When my daughter is old enough to play it, it'll probably grow on me.

And I know the 'culture of soccer' is to have a large-assed corporate logo with a tiny FC logo, I just think that the 'culture of hockey' would be so diametrically opposed to that line of thinking - as is evidenced by the poll results to date above.

I totally agree. I would HATE to see a big ad on a hockey jersey, just like you would never see a logo on a Football or baseball jersey (for the most part)

Nope, get this, you actually have to pay extra if you want to get the ad patches. I just laugh at them and say Rona and CanadInns can pay for my jersey if they want me to wear those patches on my Blue Bombers jersey.

In a way, the uniforms already have ads on them, but we have been trainined not to notice them.

RBK, Nike, Vector, Sher-Wood, Mission, etc

They are already all over the players, but we tune it out.
See how many you can see in this picture.

For the record, I vote a solid NO.

However though, the only reason those names are there is because they produce the product.
