You really have a completely wrong opinion of Peter Harrold.
Harrold is a damn good player that got caught in Dean Lombardi's system of stockpiling defensemen. It wasn't easy for Peter to make it past 5 established NHL defenseman last season. Not to mention the Kings carried 8 d-men all year with David Drewiske who barely got playing time at all either. The biggest disappointment for Harrold was in the 2010 playoffs after playing in game 2 of the first round in game 3 he was hit into the boards and broke his wrist. It hurt the Kings because he was playing solidly and it made Terry Murray put Randy Jones back into the line up. In a way that kind of sealed Peter's career as a defenseman in LA. Often, because he was trusted by Terry Murray, he would play as a winger when the Kings needed a forward in the line up. Obviously he was not the best winger but he did an adequate job on wing.
The guy is a solid underrated defenseman and maybe if he was able to get more time on ice last year he might have been able to sign a better contract. Peter can play the game and you'll be pleasantly surprised when you see him play in exhibition games.
Following are 50-man contract reserve lists. Players denoted with "SR" — the abbreviation for a contract "slide risk" — do not necessarily count toward the team's 50-man limit, meaning a team may appear over the 50-man limit when it is not. See our FAQ for more details.
So since Larsson is a "SR" I guess we are allowed 1 extra spot. Don't know exactly how all this goes though.
Thought I would give you my opinion as to the capabilities of Peter Harrold.
The first thing that I would say about him is that he is a good 5/6 dman who plays a good stay at home game but can also help out a little on O.
He doesn't do anything poorly and at times can really play a solid two way game. He isn't going to wow you ever but he will just quietly go about his job and at the end of the season you will see his stats and be surprised at how well he actually played.
Over the past two seasons he has seen spot duty but that isn't due to any lack of ability on his part but more a reflection of how deep and solid our D has become.
He really picked up his D game over the past two seasons where over 58 games he had 2 goals 5 assists and even spent time up front as a utility forward. He is a smart hockey player and a great addition to your team as a utility forward.
I have been his greatest detractor for the entirety of his time in L.A. but never due to his lack of ability or effort but more due to our depth and the desire for us to play our younger more talented players or for one of our core kid forwards to be given the spot up front that PH was taking.
I think that with a solid coach on a team with your system that PH will be an excellent option at bottom pairing D and a solid depth bottom 6 winger. He has earned his shot and is better than you will likely hear from allot of the King fans.
Nothing amazing but solid steady and capable are the words that I would use to describe him for how he will be used by you guys.
Oh and I completely disagree with what cnshockey has said about Harrold, they couldn't be more wrong.
So that is one poster telling you that they think poorly of PH's abilities and several other King fans telling you that you made a solid signing and will like the guy as a fill in bottom pairing guy or as a regular two way utility Dman who can give you a solid smart effort as a bottom 6 forward.
Like I said, I was Harrolds biggest detractor when he was a king but it didn't have anything to do with his game, the guy can play and you will like him.
I honestly did not expect two passionate Peter Harrold fans to drop by when this thread was started. If what they say is true, there really isn't any harm in signing him to this deal. What's the worst that can happen? He tells the story about how he once made the NHL to the Albany all stars like he's Crash Davis or something.

Pretty much. I bet he plays this year as your 6/7 dman and either gets rewarded with a longer contract or spends the rest of his career in the AHL, because he's a stud in the AHL.

I still can't see him playing on the NHL team barring injuries. Volchenkov, Tallinder, Greene, Larsson, Fayne, Taormina and Fraser (because of the 1-way contract) are all going to be ahead of him. Plus we have guys like Corrente and Urbom who are about even with him.
From the sound of it, I'd rather have him fill in for injuries than Jay Leach. And he might be able to help out all the kids we'll likely have in Albany. Good signing.
