Burke will probably stick with Leafs' young guns

Quite a lot of Leafs news.

http://www.torontosun.com/2011/08/12...afs-young-guns

Quote:
Toronto general manager Brian Burke has thus far not responded to unrestricted free agents who are seeking a tryout with the Leafs at next month’s training camp. Homeless veterans such as Owen Nolan and Todd Fedoruk (Vancouver) and goaltender Ray Emery (Chicago) will be getting a chance in those cities and in the past, Burke has extended a hand to players such as Jason Allison and Wayne Primeau.

“We haven’t ruled out an invitation,” Burke told Sun Media. “But most likely we will give the kids a look.

Time for Tim

One of the most interesting things Tim Connolly told NHL.com this week about the move to Toronto was what he can offer the young Leafs off the ice.

Connolly, slated to centre Phil Kessel on the No. 1 line, noted that he’ll be one of the oldest players on the team upon arrival, after turning 30 in May.
Quote:
Schenn deal on hold

Another week has gone by without any progress on a new contract for restricted free-agent defenceman Luke Schenn.

“Nothing new,” agent Don Meehan said Friday, though both sides keep insisting they aren’t in a hurry. Both are examining everything term-wise from two years and higher.

Its Bill Sweat who was in the Versteeg deal. Lee Sweat is a defenseman and his brother who signed with the Sens, and played for Vancouver last year and was the one that was called up at the end of the season and scored in his first game. Do writers research this stuff nowadays?

Your right it's late and I thought there's something wrong with that quote but maybe he got the name wrong but remember it's the Sun.

So who retired Lee or Bill......? Never mind the writer said winger....Lee is a defenseman and Bill is the winger. So BILL SWEAT retires. Wow did he even play an NHL game?

it's not lee sweat that was in the versteeg trade, but bill. That's his older brother who was with the canucks.

But good to hear that we are using this full youth movement forward, a lot of competition come training camp.

Not that it's really the key point we should be taking away from this article, but it was in-fact Lee Sweatt, not Bill, who's retiring (Bill's only 22).

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2...des-to-retire/

It's kind of funny that Bill refuses to sign with two teams, then signs with a third team that gives him much less of a shot at playing in the NHL so that he can play with his brother...only to have is brother sign with another team a year later and subsequently retire altogether from hockey.

And what's the deal with the Schenn contract talks. Leafs haven't been playing hockey since mid-April...the Stamkos saga was even over almost a month ago and even Parise and Weber agreed to contracts two weeks ago. It's inevitable, but I'd be nice to have it over and done with.

That old expression about an infinite number of monkeys on an infinite number of keyboards will eventually write all the Shakespeare works, well, that's like the Sun, except they only have 100,000 Monkeys.

That's the part of the article I find interesting too, it actually represents a shift, in getting our own young guys into the NHL and not using retreaded players, that may be looking for their last pay check, it also shows we have a pretty good prospect pool and some of the young guys are close.

Frattin has a good chance if he can continue his good play from last year.
