Kalinin Production?

Pretty much same idea as the Derek Roy thread. Gimme your thoughts on Kalinin for the upcoming season, assuming there is one.

This could get homerific.

12 Goals
35 Assists

#1 D-man, PP/PK guy, potential to wear an "A", will fall just short of Eastern Conference All-Star consideration (he'll really nail it down the homestretch).
14 goals, 29 assists = 43 points, 56 PIM, +17, TOI a shade over 25:00 a game.

Pick him up in your fantasy league.

My projection for him last year was 30 points. Let's hope I'm this accurate again this year.

My take: 12 goals, 30 assists, +10, ATOI: 24+ minutes, 70 PIM's.

The +/- gets a bump up if Z re-signs.

Ta,

IMO, Jillson will be neck and neck with Kal in terms of scoring.....we saw a young perplexed kid for the last 13 games coming to a new organization from him home town......i liked enough of what i saw to make the above statement...will depend how well he defends in his own zone and how well he is liked by the staff.....maturity can do wonders for nice kids who are unselfish to a fault!!...Just my opinion of course....

I don't see Kalinin with as much of an offensive upside as you guys, but I think he will definitely keep progressing defensively and should be top 15 in the Norris voting this upcoming season (if there is one). I'd say 9 G - 23 A - 32 PTS - +18 on a medicore team, logging about 26 minutes a game.

He put up more than that last year.

Kalinin is in the mold of Pronger, Lidstrom, and to a degree closer to him Bouwmeester. He doesn't need to rack up points through offensive skill, the points come because he is a very smart player.

Just read in the latest HockeyNews Vol.57 No.41 on page 7 that he's signed in Russia and does not have an option to return to the NHL if their is indeed a season.

I've heard that he has an option to not have an option, and he may use it againt Buffalo as a ploy for a faster, better contract.

Here is an interview with Kalinin. He says that there is no out clause, but he also adds the word "perhaps" when talking about spending the season in Russia.

Dmitry Kalinin, Buffalo Sabres defenseman answers questions to Sovetsky Sport

Q: Dmitry, how did you decide to join "Magnitka" (Metallurg Magnitogorsk)?
A: During the whole last season we had rumors in NHL about the lockout. Naturally, thinking of future, we were calculating different ways. I had visited Magnitogorsk many times back when I was a junior. I am myself a graduate of Ural hockey school, I was born in Chelyabinck. Basically I came back home. The interests came from both sides, me and club management. I chose this city to be closer to home.

Q: How long is the contract for? Will you finish the season in Russia?
A: I know what you want to know. Of course I do not to want to leave Buffalo myself. But I guess this is the fate, I will have to get used to my new club. Perhaps I will finish the season in Russia. In my contract there is no clause if lockout ends.

Q:You played in three tournaments for team Russia, you have the silver medal from the World Championship in 2002. Does it hurt not to be invited to the World Cup?
A: Yes, it hurts. But it is all up to the head coach. If Zinetula Bilyaletdinov will have extra vacancy for the team I want to officially announce that I will answer the invitation immediately.

Q: Does it mean you would be desiring to play for Russia at the Eurotour games?
A: I know that last year nobody from Metallurg played for Russia. I would change that with pleasure!

Thanks for the interview Darth.

Perhaps we can revisit all of the (insert name of Islanders top-4 defenseman) for (insert name or names of assortment of various Sabre forwards) talks.

You can have Aucoin or Hamrlik for the NHL rights to Kalinin.

At the very worst, you'll loose him for part of a season.

He should have a long productive career as a Sabre ahead of him.
