Two changes from today and then, not one.

1. Today, you can not 'sell' a player
2. Today, there is a salary cap

Both equally keeps such a trade from being at all possibile today, unless the GM is an idiot. Because in a cap world, you can not make any trade for a player of that calibre, in his prime or just entering it, that you could possibly win. Oh you could perhaps give up enough talent by completely gutting your team, now and in the future, but even if all those turned out you would lose most of them to the cap anyways. There are very few game changers, in this sport and actually all sports, and a whole lot of the same around them. The game changers basically determine who wins the cups and who does not most of the time. When you get one, unless you like being part of that vast lot of the same in the middle of the pack, you hold onto them as long as you can.

Which makes the Crosby and Malkin threads here so ridiculous. I still have no clue why they stay open when silly trades of lesser players get closed right and left as unrealistic.

Seriously no one wants Subban except Montreal. You guys keep him and have fun with him, because outside of Montreal, he's garbage.

While I do think some Montreal fans make Subban out to be better than he is, I think it's silly to say no one wants Subban, or that he's garbage. He's a talented defenseman who has the potential to be one of the better two-way guys in the league down the road. If that's considered "garbage", then there's maybe 25 to 30 defensemen in the entire world who aren't "garbage".

It is slightly offtopic, but I agree. That statement was ridiculous. You can dislike someone or a team, but not let it color your judgment.

As an Oiler fan I'd expect:

A great centre in return to fill that hole, two good prime aged players, three draft picks or a couple of prospects.

While of course, the cash considerations are not possible, to try and make any type of modern comparison to that deal... you have to put it into today's terms. That $15m was enough to run the Oilers from top to bottom for a year.

So start with about $80-90m and four first round picks.

Then add a 19-year-old elite-level center (which Carson was at the time). John Tavares is probalby about the only real analogue.

How does that sound, Isles fans? You think Wang will go for it?

I'd take him in Pittsburgh even though he Freddy Kruegered Jordan Staal's foot.

I'd offer Kessel, Schenn, Kadri and a rusty trombone.

Both Sedins, 1 of Raymond, Samuelsson or Ballard, 1 of Hodgson, Schneider or Tanev, 2 1sts (conditional) and 2 2nds (conditional) pending a cup victory, playoffs, games played, etc for Gretzky and a center (Messier )

Crosby,Malkin and draft picks is what it would take today to get The Great One.

Your a little mixed up. I'm quite sure that every team would love to have P.K in their lineup.
Outside of you and a handful of trolls, everyone knows that he's on his way to becomming a very good 2 way d-man.Should easily hit top 10 or higher at some time during his career.

What people need to remember is 15 million were more than some team's salaries back then. That was the big thing for Edmonton.

Vancouver was offered a similar deal but 18 million. Burke couldn't figure out how to make the 18 million at the time even if he increased the best season ticket prices from 27 to 28 and doubled the TV contract.

So imagine Crosby being traded for 50 million.

I know you can't trade players for money.

What? Gretzky is the best player to ever play the game (arguably). Subban and Pacioretty arent even in the same league as he is.

Gionta - Gretzky - Cole
Kostitsyn - Plekanec - Cammalleri

with Carey Price in nets... that's Stanley Cup material
