You're too old for an xbox 360; but the PS3 is suited for adults and is the overall best console with the best games. I have not turned my 360 on in 2 years; which might be for the best if you google "RROD".
The 360 community is filled with virgins and children; the games are going casual and kiddie. The PS3 is the most serious option. You also get a bluray player and do not have to pay $50-60 a year to use the internet you are already paying for.
I've been developing on both since they were launched; go for the PS3, it still has breathing room; while the 360 has been dying with no good exclusive games for the last few years. Microsoft will ditch it soon; dropping support for it. Sony is reknowned for supporting their old platforms. Heck, the PS2 is still selling well.

As someone who owns both, I strongly recommend the PS3 over the 360, unless you're dying to play Halo or Gears of War (or the superior version of Bayonetta <3).
Because people feel religious about the hardware they purchase.
OP, ignore it. Seriously. Anyone who tells you that one is the clear victor over the other is probably much, much, much more emotionally invested in it than it appears you want to be.
They both have great games. If you're just getting a system now, then you have a ridiculously large library of titles to choose from either way you go.
I'd say get a PS3... for one reason and one reason only.. the new Last of Us video game looks unreal.
But nah, at the end of the day, the only reason I picked a PS3 was because of baseball. Baseball games have always been a huge part of my life, so I had to go the PS3 route because 2K can't make a competent baseball game.
PS3 you get Uncharted, Last of Us, and MLB. 360 you get Halo, Gears of War, and Fable.
I've had both systems and they both do an amazing job. There is no real winner between the two.

What?
I know plenty of adults and aged elders who play 360.
The child problem is a problem for all platforms, you can't single it for one platform. RROD is also so 2008...it hasn't been an issue for several years now.
The only advantage the PS3 has is free online play.
PS3 has more games, free online, Bluray capabilities and a better library of stuff from previous generations.
The 360 has been riding "it's the one all my friends use" for probably two years now. I can't think of a reason to get a 360 over a PS3 unless you're going into it with some sort of social obligation.

Well, what you think are significant differentiating factors aren't to many other people.
Both platforms have their share of compelling exclusive content. If you can take the 20,000 foot view of the market, is there really a clear winner?

The PS3's biggest advantage is easily its exclusives, both now and in the future. Though even then it's a matter of preference.

If you're wondering why there have been now Sony/PS3 numbers for the past 3 months, a poster at Neogaf said this:

They stopped giving them a while ago. The implication is pretty obvious as to why.
The implication being sales are sh** right now. If that's the case, they need to step up development on PS4. Holidays 2013 please.
Not a chance. New systems would have been announced at this year's E3 already. Look for announcements at next year's E3 with releases sometime in 2014.

The word is the Next Xbox will debut at CES in early 2013, have a full line-up reveal at E3 2013, and then launch in the fall of 2013. The PS4 is less defined.
And all the YTY sales talk irritates me. This is an unprecedented 7th year of the generation. The original Xbox barely did four years - of course console hardware sales are down YTY.
My xbox is ****ed in the head. Trying to play black ops it won't ever join a game at times. If it does, you can't see the maps to vote for. It's goes to a black screen with the bops logo as if it's trying to load something when I'm doing nothing. Black ops ****ed up like this on the ps3 too, but all it did from time to time was say I wasn't signed in then boot me out.

Just curious to know if anyone here is still using the older model PS3s like the 2008 fat versions and if so.. are they still running well? Considering buying a used PS3 but only have like 100$ to spend and have gotten offered an older version but im weary of it just dying on me especially with the YLOD.

My friend has one and it still works, and he leaves it on a lot when he's not using it.
