Beleskey's recovery makes it a little harder on Gordon or Macenauer to make the team I think. At least, long term.

JFJ suspended 5 regular season games.

Rest of preseason and 5 RS games.
http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=590154

Shanahan's video: http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=60

I love the whooshing sound during the video. Hockey rule explanations aren't exciting enough, gotta spice it up!

So it looks like that rule 70.1 does apply. As written it should apply, but it's just interesting that hockey has that rule which is a little more restrictive than with other sports.

edit: nope it's a little different Ducks DVM had quoted 70.10. That indicates an automatic 10 game suspension. Shanahan quoted 70.1, and then gives only 5 games (which might be at his discretion?)

double edit: ah **** it. I went to look at the rulebook myself. I can't tell what applies and doesn't apply. Damn lawyers.

Sad to see. Would give us a good look of our 4th line right away. He earned the suspension, though, but 2-3 reg. season games would be enough.

Still not saying he did something wrong, that Duco (?) pissed everyone off, he was like Avery

Don't have a problem with it. Beleskey can take that spot since he has been cleared for contact and could be ready to go.

Agree with Shanahan. At least this will probably give Beleskey an opportunity.

I agree 2-3 would have been what I thought. But I can understand 5. He deserved it.

On side note really glad Shanahan is doing video explanations for suspensions.

Good. Didn't like him much to begin with. Unimpressed with his camp showing. Full on put off mode after that hit. Don't like him.

Meh, he hadn't been particularly effective last year. Macenauer is our fourth line center, he's here to stay. Gordon will have to suck to lose his spot to Beleskey, and I just don't see that happening. He's really got some chemistry with Cogliano.

Shanahan is trying to make a point with this one; make people shape up.

I don't think it much matters how effective he was. I think he's a much higher risk of being taken on waivers than Sexton or Bell.

Unless I'm wrong and he wouldn't require waivers to be sent down?

I don't condone what Jacques did but I'm worried that over the next few years fighting and hitting are slowly going to be phased out of the game. The fact Jacques got the same amount as Shelley who blatantly hit someone from behind at speed seems a bit strange.

shany seems to be coming down hard on anyone at the moment. will have to see if that continues through the season and applies to franchise star players.

also, i love the videos telling you exactly why and how a player is punished.

I would agree Paul......IMO Shelly's hit was much worse than Jacques and yet they get the same suspension? Doesn't exactly seem right. Hopefully Beleskey can play and take his spot.

I don't agree with Shan on any of these suspensions. Hes turning the game into one catered for soft euros. An anyways McGratten is way more troll than JFJ.

Jacques was penalized for leaving the bench on a legal line change for purposes of starting a fight. He got caught for skating right over and hitting Duco.

The alternative approach would have been for Jacques to have skated around for a short while trying to get into the play and then go over and smack Duco. Under those circumstances Jacques would have faced only a one game suspension, for instigating a fight in the last five minutes of a game. Jacques gets a five regular season game suspension for stupidity, plus his name up on the blackboard in case he gets in trouble again.

In my opinion I would send Jacques down to the AHL. I haven't seen that much out of him this pre-season. I think that the only reason that he is here is that the Ducks want to ice a large fourth line, given the rather small size of their second and third lines. I would rather have more skill than a pure goon line. If someone nabs him on waivers, then so be it. Let him be someone else's headache.

He was punished for intent, which was basically to jump a guy. I don't have an issue with the play nor the suspension.

Totally agree with this and previous suspension given by Shanny. He's not be punished for fighting, he's being punished for making no attempt to play hockey, before deliberately attacking an unsuspecting player. I'm all for what JFJ "tried" to do, but at least get involved in the play and give the opposing player the opportunity to fight back. If he doesn't oblige at that point, fine, make him oblige and take the 1 game.

I don't see how any of these suspensions show any intent to phase hitting or fighting out of the game, flying elbows, blatant boarding and muggings have been penalized for awhile now and really have no place in the game, but now the players aren't being given a slap on the wrist for those actions.

The only rule I'm worried about, is if the accidental contact to the head rule starts to be enforced, it's going to be really tough for taller players to hit smaller players, without making some sort of head contact, even if it's an otherwise clean hit.

You have to wonder if someone told him to go after the guy. because if you watch the video it wasnt like he went out there and then noticed the guy and remembered he was trollin vis. JFJ knew where he was going before he stepped onto the ice.
