Quick poll: who will light the flame? Finnish tv told just now that Kenteris was going to light but that's been changed for obvious reasons. My guess: either Nick Gallis or the womens javelin champion Mirella Manjani or the newly crowned Euro 2004 champs.

I'll watch everything and anything that has to do with the Olympics.

Has it become too commercial ? Yes. Is the IOC corrupt ? Yes. Has doping ruined some of the importance/integrity of the Games ? Yes.

Are there still exceptional stories that are based on the moral pillars of the true Olympics ? HELL YES.

Focus more so on the positives and less on the negatives (while not ignoring them).

And I don't think there's a crazier spectacle than the Opening Ceremonies, in the world PERIOD.

When I'm at home I too will be entirely glued to the Olympics.

I'm very bitter about all the drug problems, largely at the athletes who cheat, but just as much so at the countries who KNOW their athletes on doping and still let them compete (despite testing positive) in local and international events, hoping the international events just won't catch them.

That said, they're still a great thing to watch. Besides, when else can you see Trampoline on TV.

Man, the ceremonies are awesome. For those in the states, they are on at 8:00 on NBC. If you are Canadian and missed it, it will be aired again at 7:00 in each timezone respectively.

you really thought so? i kept thinking "this is like cirque de soleil without the acrobats". the "islands of greece/statue" part was ok. art parade sucked and was creepy, bjork sucked, the torch lighting was ssoooo bad. who designed that thing?

I agree, apart from the crappy music of DJ Tiesto, it was pretty good. Not as good as Sydney but better than Barcelona and Atlanta.

Yeah, I was expecting to hear Vangelis' Chariots of Fire at some stage but no. And that Olympic torch lighting was just a little bit too "erotic". I mean c'mon, who didn't think that the whole thing looked like someone getting a *****? If that huge flamed had fully light at the peek point, then it would have been like moneyshot.

I was also expecting some Vangelis at some point. Maybe he'll do something for the closing ceremony, which is also a pretty big event. The whole torch thing was strange, but at the same time pretty cool. About that.. you might be watching a bit too much porn

In any case, I'm already looking forward to when the track & field begins. I've heard the shot put and some other events will actually take place on the old Olimpia grounds. That would be truly awesome if it's true.

An Iranian Athlete is expected to withdraw from the Olympic games because he drew and isreali opponent in the opening round of what i think was Wrestling.

He refused to take part in the match against the man from Isreal.

Im sure it just Peaved the Iranians Off. USA got the loudest Cheer so far tonight, and Iraq got a loud Cheer as well. The arena was almost Silent for Iran. Hell even the Isreali's got a louder ovation than the Iranians.

Did anyone else think that when the torch was lit, it looked like a giant blunt being lit?

There's no such thing as "too much porn".

Actually the lighting of a joint could be better description for the torch thing.

It's not wrestling, it's judo.
And the guy isn't just a no-name athlete with no chance of winning. He's the world champion of his category. Twice.

In that case he's one gigantic moron. Or the Iranian officials. I wouldn't be too surprised that the guy wouldn't mind but the mullahs would be ready to hit the streets demanding his death if he wrestled the guy.
