With all of the veteran movement being concentrated up front and the relative offensive talent on defense, the chances have to be pretty slim that Alfie plays the point on the PP.

Butler - Spezza - Alife
Gonchar - Karlsson

Filatov - Regin - Michalek
Kuba - Rundblad/Lee

Smith - Condra
Phillips - Carkner/Lee

Konopka - Michalek
Cowen - Karlsson

Really not sure who's going to be playing for us on defense from night to night.

PP

Alfredsson-Spezza-Michalek
Karlsson-Gonchar

Filatov/Butler-Regin-Greening/Foligno
Cowen-Rundblad/Kuba (depending on when Rundblad is on the team)

PK

Spezza-Michalek
Phillips-Lee

Smith-Condra
Cowen-Karlsson

+ Greening, Gonchar, Winchester, Konopka

PP unit 1 will have a few guys alternate in that Michalek/net presence role imo in Foligno, Greening etc and we'll see Butler or Filatov up there at some point.

It's starting to sink in that we have Foligno and Regin on 2nd powerplay unit

Here are some locks on certain positions:

Spezza, Michalek, Regin, Alfredsson, Karlsson, Rundblad, Filatov, Gonchar.

Now others that would be on the PP rotating around would be:

Butler, Greening, Zibanejad(If he stays), Cowen, Kuba, Foligno

Locks on the PK:

Kenopka, Phillips, Gonchar, Spezza, Michalek

Close to locks:

Karlsson: This guy was a beast on the PK and ever since he joined in January last year the PP was at a 95% rate

Cowen: Will show his amazing defensive work early and become a force as the year goes on getting regular shifts

Guys who'd rotate in the remaining spots:

Carkner, Kuba, Smith, Condra, Z-bad

Therefore:

PP1:

Filatov-Spezza-Greening
Karlsson-Gonchar

PP2:

Michalek-Regin-Alfredsson
Cowen-Rundblad

PK1:

Condra-Spezza
Cowen-Phillips

PK2:

Michalek-Kenopka
Karlsson-Gonchar

He has bad vision and puck distribution skills.
And the year before that he had 8 PPG in 66 games, good for 3rd on the team, all while averaging the 8th most PP time (total and per game) on the team.

Everybody had a bad year, he had come off off-season surgery. I think we can give him another chance base on his history past just last year.

Short memories

Or maybe it's time to give someone else a chance? If you count Fisher and Kovalev, he was probably 11th on the team. He was exeptionnally bad on the PP last season. If ''everybody had a bad year'', he should still have been 3rd on the team.

But if he plays 5 on 5 with Spezza, plays well and produces, then of course I wouldn't mind seeing him on the #1 PP.

So far aragorn is the only one that makes sense.

A lot of you have Rundblad on the PP and Cowen on the PK. How are both of them going to make the team?

I also think a lot of you are underestimating the ability or Z.Smith and Condra on both the PK and the PP. They could surprise a lot of you...

Gonchar, Karlsson, Carkner, Kuba, Phillips, Lee, Cowen/Rundblad

Who goes? Let's be honest here the lines that some of you are putting together are unrealistic.

Again, he came off major knee surgery in the off-season and had clearly lost a step. Near the end of the season, he seemed to be returning to his old self. I think we can afford him a second chance, as he has shown he can contribute in the past.

There is lots of room on the power play this year to try out some unproven commodities, if you want to give up on him already, so be it, but to say he has no vision or puck distribution skills based on 1 years stats when he has shown to be effective in the years prior with us and San Hose might be a little short sighted.

If he still doesn't produce this year, we can look in another direction, but I'm pretty sure you'll see our new coach give him a fair shake before moving on to other options.

There is nothing wrong with having 8 defensemen on the team. In fact Murray has said he likes to have extra defenseman on the roster.

The only defenders that should be playing year-round are Karlsson, Phillips and Gonchar. Possibly Lee depending on which version of him shows up for the 11/12 season. Now that we have Konopka and Smith, Carkner becomes scratchable as he really brings nothing to the table beyong fighting. Kuba was awful nearly all of last season and deserves to be scratched. And is it really such a travesty to have Rundblad or Cowen sit a game or two? It's a learning experience that most young players go through at some point. It's not like they'll be scratched for 30+ games like Lee was, just a few games here and there depending on how they played in the previous game(s).

And this is not even taking injuries into consideration. The only defenseman that was healthy all last season was Phillips. Kuba, Gonchar, Carkner and Cowen all have history with injuries. We will NOT be rolling 8 defenders all season long.

Rundblad and Cowen will get plenty of NHL time.

Neil? Surprised that no one is mentioning him because he is the most effective player on this team at screening the goalie.

One of Michalek, Neil, Zbad, Greening or Foligno will be on every power play unit IMO.

I'm betting MacLean will use the Detroit system where he has big guys with soft hands infront of the net:

Greening, Michalek, Zibanejad.

Neil would be there if they got injured.

Manny you're missing a centre on your 2nd PP unit, somebody has to take the faceoffs. Who plays the PP & PK really depends on who you have in the lineup & I really don't see where both Cowen & Rundblad both make the team as rookies, especially with six defencemen already signed to contracts to play in Ottawa. One of them might make it as a 7th defencemen but I doubt both. At forward my guess is that Maclean will go mostly with experience especially to start the season & if doesn't work begin to make adjustments with whomever is hot.

I really like your PP units. I think Regin and Michalek would work very well on the PP. Regin can really hit the guy parked in front of the net, he and Fisher clicked a couple of times in this situation(even in the playoffs once vs Pittsburgh i believe) and Michalek knows how to play that position. Also the first unit is loaded with skill. However, i easily see Kuba on the 2nd unit with Rundblad instead of Phillips.

One too many drinks, maybe.

I'd switch Neil for Foligno, then. He can play a similar role in front of the net while being able to take the draw.

Spezza - Michalek - Butler
Karlsson - Gonchar

Filatov - Foligno - Alfredsson
Kuba - Rundblad
