it seems ekholm is holding nashville hostage, i say he does the right thing. He had a good enough camp to be rewarded for it. AHL has worse salary than SEL.

If Ekholm wants salary then he should probably stay in SEL. If he wants to play in the NHL he needs to go to Milwaukee when asked. He isn't holding Nashville hostage, though. He only makes $900k with another $125k in bonuses possible.

this is like someone not going to college because they can make more money by working straight out of high-school than they can while enrolled in college.

It is best he goes to AHL (college) so he can get paid the big bucks once he gets called up (graduates).

SEL might be more money for players like Haydar and Gamanche (career AHL'ers that can't play in the NHL ever), but for players that have a future in the NHL, the AHL is the way to go.

Worse case scenario he becomes an AHL'er for 2 years, goes back to SEL and makes MORE money than he would have if he hadn't played in the AHL at all. This is because he will be a better player after playing in the 2nd toughest league in the world while other SEL'ers stay the same as their level of competition has never increased.

Win-Win for Ekholm to play in the AHL to me.

I am normally not one to look kindly on players being demanding when they havent proved anything but I wonder if this isnt just more on the lines of negotiation than "hostage holding"

Probably poile said, 'we want to send you down, but dont worry you'll get a call-up" and Ekholm(cant bring myself to call him "ek") said, thanks, but if thats the case I want to execrice my contractual right to return to Sweden, and Poile, who probably planned to call him up fairly soon anyway, said "OK, hold on a minute, lets see if we can work something out" and will probably get him in enough games to know if he can hack it, and if he cant, then he sends him down to Milwaukee or Sweden, but with a healthy dose of what the NHL is really like

or.....

the brass wants him to exerience an nhl gameday and no better time than on the road vs 2 divisional opponents who also happen to very physical teams. Maybe we want a fresh body on D for night 2?

None of us know if keeping him on the big club roster for the opening game has an impact on the SEL clause of his contract. Is it Ekholm forcing the team, the team just giving him a shot, or the team maneuvering around the clause and keeping him in North America?

Maclean is on waivers. now THAT is interesting. He will never make it to us, but I bet he turns into a nice player. Now THIS is the kind of guy Poile can't pass up. If he falls to us on the wire, WE HAVE to take a shot at him. 22 year olds with that kind of shot and goalscoring potential don't just fall out of the sky. This guy is ours for the taking. He is on a cheap, one year deal that will allow him to be an RFA next season. This is our guy.

Can I quote this the next time some Neanderthal complains about us being "too soft" up here since we no longer have Jody Shelley?

My guess would be the Islanders...

I'm sure there are plenty of teams ahead of us in the pecking order who will grab him first. But, theoretically, if he does fall to us, what do we do? Grab him and put Bergfors on waivers?

I am praying that doesn't happen but it most likely will.

Maclean is a TRUE goal scoring forward. He just knows how to score goals. Some people say that he is what made Tavares look good. Don't know if he is that good but he certainly is a really good sniper and someone I would love the preds to pick up if they can. But my guess is the islanders will nab him and complete the Tavares Maclean Moulson line.

If you believe the kid has exceptional talent (I personally don't know much about him), you make room.

He's got exceptional talent. I would put him up with grabner. And its easy send Bam Bam down to MIL. Problem solved.

Maclean is also a power play specialist. He could really help our power play.

Claimed by the Jets. It was going to be a miracle if he went unclaimed until our position.

Sorry, but I don't get this.

A certain group of posters here were screaming to high heaven that we need to bring in a top 6 forward yesterday since the organization has all this money lying around. Some were saying an established top 6 forward is what was needed. This wasn't disputed so I'm assuming (and yes I know the risks when one does that), that that was accepted.
Add to that the chuckles and doubts expressed by most when the management talked up Smith and Bergfors, and yes even Spaling as having top 6 potential.

Now, we have people saying Maclean is a must and Turris is a must....
So what is it??? An established top 6 player or taking chances on young guys with potential? Now I don't really have a problem with taking chances on the young guys, because that is already happening. I just don't know why some feel the need to bring in every young guy that pops up from outside this org. Lets let our own guys play and see what happens, because, I'm not sure if everybody noticed, but they did fairly well last season.

Fair point. I just think that, for now, it's too late to get that game breaking top-6 scorer via trade, so many think "we'll take all the help we can get".

If one, or both, of Craig Smith and Colin Wilson can break out and SK, Horny, and Erat can stay consistent, we'll be just fine.

Sometimes people just want to see a move for the sake of making a move. The grass is always greener...

It would have been nice to land Maclean, but nothing changes in terms of wants and needs.

Maclean picked up by Jets, a young 21 year old kid named Patrice Cormier now has been sent down after thinking he had made the squad!
Tough day for him.
