Thornton "Proposal"

To Boston - Roenick, Richards, Pitkanen

To Philly - Thornton, Gonchar

What you guys think ?? Boston and Philly points of view !!!!!!

Roenick would fill in short term, Richards longterm. Pitkanen steps in and is a possible future Norris winner.

Flyers get 2 All stars, BUT 12 million per in salary ????

no way. this trade would set the flyers back years in developing a core of homegrown talent. i'd rather have the flyers waitng for carter, richards et al. to joins pitkanen, gagne, radio, etc.

I wouldn't do it, Pitkanen will be better than Gonchar, and Roenick + Richards is better than Thornton.

Flyers fans, he IS talking about Joe Thornton, not Scott Thornton! I agree, forget about trading both Richards and Pitkanen at the same time; it won't happen. Leave the d-men out of this deal, though, and I'd do it in a heartbeat. Roenick makes $7 mil next year, and Joe Thornton is a franchise player. Losing Richards would hurt, but not nearly as bad with a 25-year-old stud 1st line center coming back. Almost all of the criticism of Thornton during the playoffs was not legit. Besides, it would eliminate the need to sign someone for big-time $ before the season if Zhamnov isn't back. Imagine the possibilities:

Gagne-Thornton-Knuble
Free Agent to replace LeClair-Handzus-Amonte
Radivojevic-Primeau-Kapanen
Somik-Sharp-Stevenson
Fedoruk/Brashear

Boston would never do this deal...I'm sure they wouldn't give you guys a bag of peanuts for Roenick and his health issues...Fans of every team will always overrate their own prospects..but the fact is Richards really isn't all that great..2nd liner at best...Pitkanen is pretty awesome...possibly a future Norris candidate but very far from a guarantee..compared to Gonchar who has already established himself as probably the best point producing dman in the game...From a Bruins point of view I wouldn't even think twice about this deal...

And I"m a fan of neither team

I am a huge Richards fan, but I'd do this deal in a second as well. Thornton in orange and black is a very, very nice thought. There's no way that Boston makes this deal though.....

Charlie_Girl, I know my couter-proposal seems not to make much sense for either team (especially Boston), but there have been reports this offseason that both Thornton and Roenick want out of their respective cities. Who knows?

Sami Kapanen has definitely NOT retired, and has apparently assured Clarke and Hitchcock he will be back next season. NHLPA's website has him listed as active and due to make $2.5 mil for 2004-05.

Gosh Boston want to get rid off Thornton ... OK OK we will take him... Since they want JR we will give him and John Lecliar... Oh yeah we will throw in Amonte to make the deal sweeter for Boston... Do we have a deal ?

From the Bruins point of view I would say no but the proposal is reasonable. If JR was about 5 years younger I'd maybe say yes to this deal.
How about this proposal:
To Philly: Thornton
To Boston: Handzus, Pitkanen and Sharp or Radivojevic
It seems pretty fair to me although I don't know much about Sharp or Radivojevic's potential. Tell me what you think.

Hmmmm...... no!!!!!. Pitkanen is way to valuable. Handzeus, Sharp and radio for thorton would work for me but boston would laugh at that.

I still think Roenick, Richards, and maybe a low pick for Thornton is the best deal. Although Handzus and Richards and a pick/throw-in for Thornton would be fine with me as well. I'd love to have Big Joe here. The guy is a stud.

:lol ....that is one of the funniest things I've ever read. Richards isn't all that great. Right. A more polished player than Jeff Carter. The only difference between Carter and Richards is about 4 to 5 inches and 20 to 30 pounds. If Richards were built like Jeff, I'm sure that there would be this whole thing that Richards would be the hot prospect. When are people going to learn that guys like Richards turn out to be great players. No reason why he can't be a player similar like Mark Recchi or Martin St.Louis. I'm so sick of Richards being slagged on here. Some people will never learn.....

I agree on Richards. I believe he will be a very good 2nd/3rd line player in the NHL. When going after a franchise center like Thornton, though, good prospects are what will get the deal done. JR or Handzus would be the short-term replacement in Boston; Richards the long-term center prospect.
