Jets interested in Kyle Wellwood?

Andy Strickland reports,

Not really sure how I feel about Wellwood, I guess if anything he woukd give us some 3rd line depth. I've never really been a big fan but he has seemed to do ok here and there while he was with the Canucks and Sharks. Then again, they've also never held on to him.

It appears Wellwood has an offer on the table from the Jets, but seems to be wanting a return to SJ.

Reading some SJ fans thoughts, they actually seem pretty happy with his play last season as he is said to have good chemistry with Pavelski. Many Sharks fans want him re-signed and some are surprised he has yet to be signed.

From what i hear Wellwood is fairly lazy, that seems to go against what theyre trying to build here. But if the SJ fans liked him then maybe he has changed!

Nope, don't want him. Everyone knows he is lazy, and pretty good chance he's out of shape.

btw, shouldn't this thread really belong in the Speculation sticky thread?

I figured it was fine to have it's own thread, especially given the slow time of the year we're currently in.

Why not, I wouldn't mind seeing Welly in a Jets Jersey, if he sucks waive him and he could get claimed by San Jose or something or play with the Ice Caps

I don't dislike him, but he's basically the same player as Ben Maxwell.

Personally, I'd rather go after a guy like Victor Oreskovich to replace Rypien's toughness.

With all due respect to Maxwell, Wellwood has some world class skill that Maxwell doesn't. I think Welly could put up some really good numbers if given some opportunity, his problem is that he's a bit of a liability when the other team has the puck.

I wouldn't mind giving him an chance at earning a spot - if he doesn't, we have some more rounded young guys like Maxwell who can do good things for us.

I was never a fan of Wellwood, but I can't really see the downside in giving him a 1 year contract or even a tryout.

Wellwood has already been given a few chances by multiple teams, with less than stellar results (hence he bounces around from one year to the next). What would make Winnipeg any different?

Besides, we already have an abundance of 3rd and 4th line players thanks to ASG's inability/unwillingness to actually build a team over the prior years.

This. I don't want a player who's horribly out of shape for his career. Not saying to the average person here folks. But professional hockey demands a lot physically. There is that pic where he has a big gut. I mean everyone is entitled to let themselves go every now and then. It's to be expected in North America in this day in age, of fast food, and overly processed junk. But when you're a professional athlete you need to keep up on that. In Vancouver his minutes were used sparingly. He had all the skill and talent, but he couldn't take long shifts. I noticed he became a power play specialist in Vancouver due to his poor health, and saw next-to-no even strength minutes. Don't know how he was treated in San Jose. He could be have been a 70 point NHLer if kept up on the health end of things.

I just feel with guys like Zherdev, Pesonen, and now Wellwood, we seem to be reaching.... a lot! And I usually am one to back up TNSE and their choices. But lately, eh... Unless the fact we're interested in Wellwood is just pure speculation at this point, which I hope it is.

I just don't really see the need to pick him up. I fully understand the importance of depth, and he would be a useful addition to our third line. But when I watch him play effort at times appears to be lacking, which is a major concern for me. He's a player that I wouldn't mind falling into our laps, but hardly a player I'd like to see our front office pursue.

Kyle Wellwood is well worth the money and the lazy play during the regular season because he plays his best hockey from April onwards. I can't believe people are still saying he's lazy just because he was overweight in one picture online when he had an injury. Don't think with a baby now he'll be lazy. So he likes junk food. Big deal. Have you seen hockey players after they retire? They're all fat except for Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman.

SOB is fat and no one says he's lazy.

Pass on Kyle Wellwood.Guy does have talent but no heart.

I remember when he had a 5 goal game years ago against Cleveland. He had skills.

Thought he would be a star...

I got to see a lot of Wellwood when he played for the Canucks and IMO he wasn't nearly as bad or 'lazy' as everyone makes him out to be. He played really well on the third line in Vancouver, give him some decent minutes and line mates that aren't complete pluggers and I could see him hitting the 40 point mark again.

I say go for it.

I don't know enough about this player to make a specific comment on him......but we have to realize we are gonna have to take a few chances on guys with talent that have a few question marks...If we only want guys that are full of talent, have great hearts, and are boy scout troop leaders then we will never get anyone....Lets roll the dice on a few guys who are not total ****** bags and see who sticks while we are building our team up IMO

So if Wellwood doesn't come here, I wonder if we'd roll the dice on a guy like Steve Bernier? Perhaps not the popular opinion, but i'd be open to giving him a shot, even more so than Wellwood, personally.

I watched Wellwood a lot with the Canucks. He'd have flashes of brilliance here and there but overall he's a bit too soft for a bottom 6 role. He also had his infamous conditioning problems but I don't think that's a problem anymore.

I got to see him quite a bit with Canucks as well. He looked lost most nights.
