The dreaded sophomore slump

Ok.... since MDZ went through it last year, who is it going to be this year?

Sauer
McD
Stepan

I'll say Stepan. He'll get less PP time this year and Richards is gonna eat up a ton of minutes.

But that wont be a reason to give up on him.

Explain to me why it has to be someone. IMO it won't be any of them.

I can't really see it happening to anyone. Del Zotto was different. His defense always sucked, and his offensive game crapped out too. Sauer, and McD are only expected to play defense, and not put up 40 points. And Stepan is developing properly, and will slowly improve every season. I can see a sophomore slump for some other guys in the league though. Especially Skinner, because he was way overhyped. And to make him an allstar

This thread screams Stepan. I just have this extreme gut feeling that he won't do nearly as well as he did his rookie year.

Stepan. But I think hell still manage to match his output from last yr. He wont improve but he wont do worse.

Yea, Stepan feels like a good candidate. But heck he may surprise and now that hes used to a 82 game schedule he may put up more points. We sha'll see.

Over-hyped player doesn't mean a guarantee for a sophomore slump. Skinner is a stud. I expect 60-70 points again next year.

There won't be one and why should we expect there to be one?

Stepan, McDonagh and Sauer all played well last season and are in no position where they'll fall from grace. Stepan and McDonagh both stepped up to a new level of ice hockey and did very well, considering Stepan was able to play 82 games plus 5 playoff games, I don't see fatigue hurting him. All 3 of last year's rookies will improve, they don't have confidence issues and all are mature enough to know what they have to do to succeed.

There was an article floating around here that basically debunked the sophomore slump. Yeah, it does happen, but no more frequently than a junior slump, or a fourth year slump, etc. From freshman to sophomore years is when players tend to make their biggest jump in production at any point in their careers.

If Stepan "regresses," I have a feeling it will be due more to the addition of Brad Richards than to any deficiency in his own game. I'm pretty confident both defenseman will be fine in their second years.

I hear you. All 3 players looked really good last year. It just seems the dreaded slump happens.

Stepan looks really poised out there like a veteran and Sauer and McD seem to keep the game simple.

I think his conditioning improves as does his defense, making him a responsible, but not necessarily offensive player out of limited ice time and less experienced linemates.

I could see Stepan getting better but possibly not improving on his numbers much because of Richards taking ice time away. Richards should be an excellent mentor for Dstep and AA. 3 pretty solid 2-way centers there. BR also won't take too much PP time from Dstep as he plays the point. I'm hoping BR can actually pair with Staal on the PP and bring back some of Staal's Sudbury offensive prowess.

Sauer has enough pro experience that I doubt we'll see any regression in his game. Step and McD could see some trouble, but I don't think it's especially likely in either case.

Ice time shouldn't be a problem for Stepan. He got decent minutes last year and still produced, assuming he gets better skill wise, he should produce slightly better even with limited minutes.

If anything, I expect Stepan to receive top line powerplay minutes. Some might complain he can't win a faceoff, but players do improve. Anyone remember how bad Sidney Crosby was at faceoffs? How good is Crosby now? Stepan is definitely one of the better center options on the powerplay with Richards on the point.

I'd assume the powerplay would be:

Callahan-Stepan-Gaborik

Richards-Erixon/Girardi

Stepan would just swap with Callahan after the faceoff.

Anyone can argue that Dubinsky or Boyle would be better suited on the top powerplay, but neither are as creative offensively as Stepan. Boyle can provide a net presence, but Callahan also does that.

I don't think any of them will have one.

If anyone, it will be Stepan because of a reduced role/playing time.

Richards had 5 minutes of PP time per game and close to 22 minutes a game. Prospal played 3 minutes a game and Frolov 2 minutes so Stepan might not lose a lot of PP time but will ES time.

If Stepan doesn't have a hat trick in the first game I'm going to label him a bust!

Nobody. Our roster is more balanced so Stepan doesnt have to worry about his wingers changing and that will make the chemistry only better. So if any thing hes going to get alot better.

I wouldn't consider his production decreasing because of Richards eating into his ice time as a sophomore slump...I would consider a regression in his game a slump. If he gets less minutes and his point total drops, but he continues his NHL progression it will be a successful season for him and the future of this team.
