I was so pumped when we signed BJ.. even though the contract was ridiculous... he was awesome his first year. Looked like we'd be set. He sure found a way to dash my hopes

I agree, a dependable lefty would be extremely beneficial for our bullpen.

Normally. I'd agree with you but I don't see one prospect in our system that would be ready to be our full-time closer next year. I could see Anthopolous signing a FA closer to a 2 year deal.

Theres no doubt in my mind Jesse Litsch is a major league calibre pitcher, and an above average one at that. Go look at his numbers in the pen this year. He's been virtually lights out. Definitely part of this team's future staff.
I think that was his second year but I agree.

I don't like Litsch as a starter but as a reliever to work an inning or two he has been good. I think Buck said it, in a limited role he can be effective when he only has to use two or three pitches and doesn't have to pace himself.

I definitely think Litsch will be a solid pen guy for us in the future... Just keep him out of the rotation.

Many of the guys who are great closers, never projected as closers.

It's really funny how so many people can't grasp that. The greatest closer in history, Rivera is a failed starter. Paplebon is a failed starter. Broxton was mainly a starter in his minor league career. Joel Hanrahan is a failed starter. Jordan Walden failed as a starter and moved to the pen in the minors after starting 55 games. Daniel Bard started 22 games and failed in the minors. Antonio Bastardo is a failed starter. Ryan Madson is a failed starter etc...

Let's not piss away money getting a closer.

Unfortunately throwing strikes is a pre-requisite.

Failed starters that became closers struggled with command.

closer is the most overrated position in baseball. There is no diff between a 7th inning reliver, 8th, or 9th.

If we can sign fielder, CJ wilson ,and papelbon we'll make the playoffs next year. IF we sign two we will as well. We need a starter, and we need a closer but i'd rather spend the 15 mill it take to get papelbon elsewhere like a large chunk of fielders salary. Our offense has a lot of potential but it is young and inconsistent and we need a consistent allstar cleanup behind bautista.

Lineup:
Escobar SS
Rasmus CF
Bautista RF
Fielder 1B
Lawrie 3B
Johnson 2B
Lind/Encarnacion DH
Arencibia C
Thames LF

Would love it ... but just far too unrealistic to think 1. that they'd all make it to FA and 2. that we'd go out and sign them to massive deals. Just not AA's style.

We've already been over the closer discussion. And we already have a solution: Brett Lawrie for closer.

So far has he shown that there's anything he can't do? Based on that he shouldn't have a problem closing.

He also battled injury problems in that time. He seems to be healthy again and back to his old form. I really like him out of the pen. He could be a great middle reliever for us. Him and CV as the long arms out of the pen should be a great combo.

Does anyone think CV can close out games for the rest of the season? He has 3-4 quality pitches and may not posses the 96 mph heater but can get batters out with multiple pitches.

I'd rather have somebody who has a larger gap in velocity between his fastball and a slider/changeup if we're talking closers.

Lineup: escobar 6 thames 7 bautista 9 lind 3 encarnacion dh johnson 4 lawrie 5 molina 2 mccoy 8 alvarez 1

Why does Bautista keep popping up so much lately.

And I hate this park with the 6'0 wall.
