How has Orlov looked in camp and preseason? Any chance he plays with the Caps this season?

Concussion for MJ wasn't confirmed and he skipped 1 practice only as far as I understand. So hopefully it was illness really.

johansson was back at practice yesterday. i'd assume that means he really had a cold.

backstrom getting back on the right track with semin has its interests as well.
Personally, the way I look at it is this: I don't think Mojo's yet ready to consistently create offense on his own, but playing with Ovechkin he doesn't need to do that. On the other hand, Backstrom is clearly capable of controlling play in the offensive zone. We can rely on him to make the right read, deliver crisp, accurate passes to Semin's stick, etc. My view has always been to spread scoring. Some teams prefer to jam their top line, and it can work, but I just don't think a 2nd line of X-Mojo-Semin will score enough consistently, and we know the 3rd line isn't going to do much this year. I really don't like the idea of being a 1-line team.

whats difference in spreading the offense around when backstrom and ovechkin are on one line and johansson and semin on another and ovechkin with johansson with semin and backstrom together?

the caps do occasionally go super line with 28 moving up, but that has proven to largely be a late game attempt to come from behind more than anything else.

That's still easily doable with moving OV a line down =) But now as a right-wing!

That could have another dynamic to it. While in the past it was standard OV-NB pair that losed puck-retriever (Knuble) and added speedy winger (Semin) late in the game just to up the tempo of the very North-South game (and NB was in north-south mode every second of it)

now NB will play with Semin permanently and will play differently. And adding OV to this pair will make it the same line on the paper but maybe with another mechanics (just because Semin-NB will play different game all the way).

I dream about Brouwer suddenly finding himself as a good finisher. That would solve such a need for OBS at all.

Simply put, Ovi doesn't need an elite centerman to dominate, so why put the only one you have with him? Let that elite centerman carry the play on another line -- a line which could use the help considerably more.

I know right....I don't want to believe Ovy will continue to score less when he shoots less either.

If anything, the implication of that article was the opposite. But yeah.

If you got "Ovy shoots too much" from that article, I would suggest some reading comprehension classes...

The numbers show he's good at two things...generating shots where others can't, and that he needs a high number of shots to score as his efficiency isn't anything to write home about...

Ovechkin will always need an elite centerman. He may dominate physically, but someone still has to deliver the passes for him to score goals. He hasnt been good on his own since his rookie year. Teams just double-team him and he runs out of room. I think whoever starts clicking with Ovie this season be it MJ of Backs will be on the top line.

VogsCaps: Pending clearance of waivers for all, Chris Bourque, Sean Collins and Patrick McNeill have been reassigned to Hershey of the AHL. #Caps

Could be Orlov as 7D if Erskine isn't ready.

Yay?

I really have no idea if this is good or not. I was kinda hoping McNeill would get a shot at that role, but whatever.

Trade Schultz!

I wonder how dashtary feels about Orlov potentially making the team out of camp.

i think there is probably more to this than meets the eye. i would be pretty surprised if they kept orlov as the 7th. once clearing waivers may collins and mcneill be recalled without recall waivers? i thought i read that they could.

it may also signal that erskine will be ready to at least backup by the start of the season.

Erskine has shed the no-contact jersey so there you go.

Either way, getting Orlov another game with one of the regulars would be beneficial. I think he's probably shown enough to be right there with Collins as first call-up.

I'm a bit surprised that Katie seems sure that there's only one roster spot open for Earkin, Perreault and Sjogren. Considering how he was used last season, I'd very much think King is on the bubble. Seems to me that Boudreau would prefer any of those three over a seldom-employed enforcer.

Just wait for the first unrecognized name that pops up as an insider and ask him.

I think Beagle & Perreault are in. The last spot probably comes down to Sjogren or King or Dumpster McDivington.
