Sabres no longer have an offer on the table for Zhitnik...

Darcy Regeir was on the Simoncast today, he said "It will take creative financing to get him under contract again". His reasoning is that payroll has increased significantly, Dumont and Briere with 50% raises, Biron and Hecht with almost 30% raises. Also stated we need a new CBA...

We still need to sign Vanek too!

Where the heck is this team going??

Restricted Free Agents yet to sign:
Andrew Peters
Dimitri Kalinin
Norm Milley
Ryan Miller
Doug Janik
Milan Bartovic

I'm really holding out hope that this is just a negotiating ploy. Darcy is ever the politician.

Sadly, it makes more than enough sense to be true.

wait...

i have a few ideas i want to run by you guys..tell me your opinion:

Dan Mcgillis - could be a number 2 to kalinin???
Jiri Slegr - A number 3 or 4 and at a very cheap price

and my personal favourite..

Mathieu Biron - not an fa but maybe a trade to florida giving them what they deperately need and thats satan a goal scorer..and we get biron because he is what we need. He will add sze and depth, a number 5 dman and give us alot of room to get one of my top two other choices or even both..or get back zhitnik
Not to mention his brotyher is Martin our goalie and i think he would defend well for his brother and it would help our back end

Doesn't suprise me a bit.

Did you see the whole interview??

If yes, did he say anything bout Vanek?

Actually I listed to the webcast since I live in a non-hockey household that won't spring for Empire. Then again I'm moving to the heartland this weekend anyway... Neither here nor there, I did hear the entire interview.

Simon brought up Vanek, Regier didn't really say anything new. The want to get Vanek signed, don't know if it'll happen. There's some deadline in place before they'll worry about it next year (for Minnesota's sake) but Regier was coy about what that date is.

i think regier is doing a fine job resigning
all the major rfa pieces besides kalinin are locked up and its mid august
i dont remember this happening much in the past

regardless of whether or not you are satisfied with the team's overall performance last year, there were several players who took big steps and that means more money

Jeez this Zhitnik-debacle has dragged on and on. How many times has he said he wants to leave Buffalo and how many times has Regier said he'd accommodate his request??? That was some twelve months ago. So why is Zhitnik still hanging around??? He should just head elsewhere. The Sabres clearly can't afford his rich tastes, but I suspect that the market is no good for someone like Zhitnik and that he will have a hard time getting what he considers his market worth.

I think Regier has been wise in pulling the offer off the table. The young core of the team is much more important than a guy who keeps changing his mind about what he wants to do ....

Wrong, our "young core" that hasn't made the playoffs is taking a step backward in losing Zhitnik. He was a great mentor for most of the young players and was the most reliable D-man we had. Darcy isn't wise, he is a joke...

Well our young core hasn't made the playoffs with Zhitnik. Zhitnik is one of my favorite Sabres and defenseman league-wide. He seemed to do a fine job mentoring Kalinin. We need a top 4, likely top 2 defenseman.

We don't need Zhitnik. We need Zhitnik or someone who can fill his spot.

The reported offer Darcy gave was great. It was lots of money over lots of years. Zhitnik's agent said it was a serious offer, "nothing to scoff at" or something to that tune. Zhitnik said he didn't WANT to leave and wasn't looking for BIG money. He said he wanted security. Well, he had an offer that gave him security, big money, and a chance to stay here. He didn't take it. Apparently no one else offered a similar deal or even a lower deal from a team he'd take a cut to play for, otherwise he'd be signed.

If Zhitnik wants to come back Darcy will make the room for him. When Darcy says the offer is off the table, he isn't saying "we won't take Zhitnik back". He could offer a smaller contract that Zhitnik would have to swallow should he not get something better. He could move some salary to make room. He could have made the whole line up just to pressure Zhitnik.

Honestly, Darcy has handled Zhitnik well and has re-signed our entire team. While he hasn't done anything beyond that, not many teams have. Who knows, he could be trying. His hands could be tied financially. No one may be interested in what he is peddling.

We just don't know. But going by what we do know, he's handled Zhitnik properly.
