The Business of HockeyDiscuss the financial and business aspects of the NHL. Franchise sales, valuations, TV contracts, ratings, expansion, relocation, the CBA and work stoppage discussion goes here.
Do TV ratings numbers include people watching online? (NHL gamecenter) If not, shouldn't they start? Prices are quickly coming down on web-compatible TVs, and that seems to be the way of the future.

AFAIK, no.
That's not to say that isn't tracked (and reported somewhere).
Not to sound like a game hater or whatever, but for American T.V. alot of those ratings/viewers are down right pitiful from a T.V. standpoint. Shows get canceled for averaging 3.? viewers and the NHL is averaging under 2 and for a lot of games under 1. I will never understand why T.V. stations pump out huge amounts of cash for some sports, NHL included. Good to hear numbers are up though.

Nielsen ratings are a bunch of crap anyways so it doesnt bother me much .

Because the rights to air games are likely much cheaper than the production costs of programs. Also, NBC airs the finals AFTER their season schedule has ended. And it gets better ratings than other crap they could air on weekend afternoons.
You are right tv ratings can be low for sports. The NHL averaged 1.6 million for regular season hockey on NBC. Major League Baseball averaged 2.7 million on Fox. One major difference was that Fox has three games on instead of one. There are six markets to two for the NHL so not as far behind as people think. The big plus for advertisers is the 18 to 40you demo that they seek for there products. The NHL is very strong in that area. Over the last three Stanley cup finals the NHL averages 5 to 6 million viewers on NBC and they usually win the night for viewership in the 18 to 49
Age. Although I would like to point out that atleast one Stanley Cup final game on each of the last three years averaged over 8 million viewers. Thanks.
anyone have a good site to get these ratings on a weekly basis? Also it should be noted that buffalo has rochester an hour away which is a big sabres market. I would expect those two markets combine for about 1,000,000 tv households.

The Voice Of TV has the full U.S. cable and broadcast ratings for virtually every day although the cable ones have been delayed lately. Any ratings you see posted almost always come from them. Its always fun to see how the NHL does in comparison to its competition and the Voice of TV lists everyone, not just hockey.

There were obstacles against it, like a January 2nd date instead of New Year’s Day, and a two-hour time delay, but the NHL’s 2012 Winter Classic featuring the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers still drew the lowest overnight in the history of the event.
According to Sports Business Daily (reg. required), NBC drew a 2.4 overnight rating. While this is still more than double what any indoor hockey game would draw and very solid for any January 2nd NHL game, this is the lowest overnight rating for any of the first five, and down 15% from last year’s primetime edition of the game. The game faced heavy competition, including the Outback Bowl on ABC, which drew a 5.0, and the 9.0 overnight for the Rose Bowl on ESPN.
