The last straw was the Ryan Miller trade. Pat Lafontaine was pushing to give Miller an extension. Tim Murray was pushing for a trade.
If this was the last straw, what was the first straw?
If you follow @Hope_Smoke LaFontaine's "exhaustive" search may not have been all that it seemed. I guess he was actually trying to ply information on how to run a front office from the various candidates, and wanted a guy with little to no experience who would essentially act as his puppet. Apparently his many interviews also irked a few rivals, which Pegula & Co. probably weren't happy about. In any event, it looks like he wanted more power in day-to-day operations and once he realized Murray wasn't about to cede any authority, he bolted.
The Isles resignation was justified. Neil Smith was fired because he refused to sign DiPietro to a 15-year deal, and LaFontaine wasn't consulted, so he left there afterwards. However, this just looks bad on Patty no matter how you spin it.
BTW, I don't see Burke being able to cede this kind of power in Calgary either, except I think Calgary's ownership is dumb enough to let him do what he wants.
