You're mixing up two ideas. Lemieux was by all accounts a great teammate, he was disliked in other team's locker rooms, and understandably so. A locker room cancer would be some who divides his own team. There have been plenty of rumors, usually around young stars who have been traded inexplicably. Richards, Phaneuf, etc. But there's no real confirmation outside of the rumor mill.

Hmmm, it baffles me to hear that Claude wasn't a pest in his own locker room. As what I heard of, he was much of a journyman due to the the pest-factor. Have I got this all wrong?

Claude was a great teammate without any question.

The obvious answers to your question are Heatley, Phaneuf (Neon Dion version from CAL), Anderson (last year with Avs was a disaster), and Avery (everywhere except in NY).

I'd say he was more of a journeyman due to him being a solid complimentary piece, rather than a core player. He only played for 6 different teams, and that's including the comeback stint with San Jose.

I don't know about being a cancer in general, but Tom Barrasso was notoriously protective of his spot and he'd be vicious towards young goalies he saw as a threat to it. He threw a chair at J.S. Aubin not too long before he ended being traded. It's really weird that he's working with young goalies now in Carolina.

It's weird that Avery is definitely not a cancer in NY. From what I've read, in LA, Detroit, and Dallas, almost everyone disliked him. It seems Richards is the only player who liked him on Dallas.

There were rumors that Ethan Moreau was less than stellar in the dressing room. If it's true about both Richards AND Moreau, LA might have some issues this season

On that note, Aebischer was apparently pretty bad in Colorado. Felt he was above competition, and was entitled to the starter job over Budaj and Kolesnik.

I think the locker room cancer is a HFBoards phenomenon.

There's always going to be players who are well liked by all (rip Belak), and players who are disliked (Avery) and there's always going to be personalities that clash, but really, cancer?

Only in the rarest of occasions is a player actually going to be detrimental to the play of others on the basis of their personality or mannerisms.

Ed Belfour was pretty much the same way. He did not take kindly towards his backups.

As for locker room cancers, you don't hear much stuff come out from locker rooms. There have been some dramatic events involving individual players or teammates, Vancouver for example with Messier and Bure not seeing eye to eye and Bure's demand to get traded.

Eric Lindros was known to be a headcase, mainly due in part to his overbearing parents. But as far as I recall, none of his teammates had any problems with him, so I'm not sure if you could really label him as a locker room cancer.

You've got it completely wrong. He was loved by his teammates.

Not sure about elsewhere but I know that Pronger wasn't well-liked in the Oilers' dressing room.

Not to be a huge homer here but from what I've heard Heatley is a great guy in the lockerroom. Talking to some San Jose fans they had nothing but good things to say about how Heatley behaves in the lockerroom. It's all the trade stuff that makes him seem like a bad teammate and of course the Dan Snyder incident that makes him look like a bad person.

I heard talk of Matt Cooke being traded out of Vancouver because he was a lockerroom cancer. Don't know about elsewhere though.

I think it's possible to be liked in some rooms and disliked in others. Avery is a vocal guy and I could see him rub some people the wrong way. Many things as of late point to him being a decent guy of the ice.

The obvious ones are Carter and Richards. Can't think if anyone else who's been traded for scraps lately where the player wasn't driving the trade.
