I'll stick with Ales Hemsky because he's a prime example. He is being paid nicely, but that's not even a big problem for a team like ours. There's surely room for his contract. Based solely on his skill set, he would make a lot of sense on a line with our young skill players, primarily Tavares. He would be a real upgrade. Then again, alone these points are a chief reason for Edmonton to keep him as well. In addition, he has a terrible track record to date in the injury department. He's very much a risk there. Lastly, since he does have his skillset and is a player who - if playing well - will gain serious interest from persuers, he will only come at a good price. There is a market.

This all said, he's a UFA next summer. As such, he is of true interest primarily to teams who view him as the type of guy who can put them over the top in the playoffs.

I personally cannot see any player in the league at this level of skill and value who is A) available, B) can come at anything other than a huge overpayment or C) would sign with us as a UFA over a number of other teams from whom he can get similar money (even if we're offering more).

It seems to be little more than tomfoolery to be suggesting Snow should have brought in personnel of this type by now. The ability to do so simply isn't there.

Clearly, only the improvement of our internal talents (of which we now have quite a few starting to arrive) plus overachieving performances by under-the-radar signings can get us to the playoffs, and thus to a position that MIGHT make us more enticing to such an UFA or a player who'd have to waive an NTC to come here (of which there are many, including Bouwmeester who several folks here feel should be targeted).

Pandolfo: This means nothing and there is no logical argumentation that his being invited to camp is to be seen as a negative mark against management. None.

The lacking Dman: Raise your hand if, despite the track record to date (especially in recent years), you truly believe this team isn't adding a Dman who makes sense at the latest by the waiver wire upon conclusion of the preseason?!
Best post of the offseason.

Really who are you arguing against?
-Who do you suggest as a "quality NHL vet"?

love to hear that (who you come up with). Its an easy thing you got, waiting till after July 1st, when we dont get anyone of note and then wait until that chance is less than .00001% (a few weeks later) and complain. Great. But no answers, just complain.
Try and pay attention through your yearly rose colors glasses. There are people saying this is a good move. How about Carter, and Richards for starters?

Like posting answers really changes things. Here is a clue, it is not my job to build the team, it is Snows.

The forward, no. Maybe a 2% chance it happens.

The defenseman, maybe. I give a 49% chance it happens.

Top 2 d-man, or something less?

Who wants to trade away a real top 2, unless he got caught burying a body in his backyard? I am hoping for a 24+ year old with top 4 written all over him, and a chance at top 2. It keeps with the rebuild and will replace to some degree the kids we will have to cough up to get him.

The other route is taking someone in their 30s short term. Hannan would have been a move in that direction, but Hannan is a low end second pairing defenseman, and declining due to age.

That its a no lose situation, that they dont expect him to be a big top 6 player. No one is saying that he is going to be a great player. You really think Carter and Richards want to come here?

Yeah easy to attack, but too tough to even say how to fix things. Because you don't have to explain yourself, but anything anyone else says is garbage.

You have no answers. Because it isnt that easy. Plus the uncertainty of the lease in 2015. But that is nothing...it should be so easy.

No one is saying Pandolfo is our savior. But yet it is so easy to be NHL GM. And you know for a FACT that Snow didn't offer to trade for Mike Richards or try to sign Brad Richards. . You know and you think Snow is useless right???

The fact that anyone is pissing & moaning over an invite is beyond absurd. This is just a look-see at a guy who was a solid pk'er. It doesn't mean he makes the team, so what's the issue?
If he plays great, shows he can still offer something to a team and snow signs him to a 2-way deal, then he EARNED it. If he doesn't, then good luck elsewhere Jay. I cannot stand the ridiculous whining of some people here. If there's a reason, then fine, I'd understand, but its a damn camp invite!
Yes, gmg hasn't gotten a top-4 dman & odds are, at this point, he won't. Maybe something shakes down in another teams camp & we get lucky, maybe it doesn't. This team played real well from December on, with a defense similar to what we have going into the year...with one big difference. Mark Streit, a garth snow ufa addition, will be back. An all-star #1 dman will make a big difference in our favor. Sliding hamonic or amac down to the 2nd pair which will make it that much more difficult for teams now.
Does the team have holes? Yes. Will a training camp invite make this team worse? In no way could that ever happen, so stop finding nothing to cry about.

The culture of losing and mismanagement are part of the reason they would not want to come here. Part of that is on your hero Snow. I know for a FACT he did not get either one of them here. In the end that is what matters. Guess what? It is not my job to fix the team, and all your "logic" shows is that Snow is no better than your average fan. Thanks for proving my point.

This thread and the tattoo thread are amazing! Just wanted to chime in with that.

Does no one remember all the training camp invites from last season? I don't recall anyone freaking out then. Dean McAmmond, Manny Legace, Anders Eriksson, Krys Kolanos and Joel Martin were all invited and NONE of them made the big club. These players are brought in to push the competition level for the young players, to provide any knowledge/experience they might have onto the young players and to give these guys a chance to earn SOME sort of contract playing professional hockey (whether it be within the Isles organization or elsewhere). This is such a no-brainer, no-lose situation and yet people always find something to ***** about.

Folks, 10 days to camp and 7 days to the rookie game. At that point, hopefully we'll have more substantial topics to discuss.

Why are we still debating and talking about a camp tryout? Pandolfo has little to no chance to get a contract.

Not making it to the playoffs is NOT going to next level. But you keep trying to justify failure. No surprise though.

A lot of the team'ss core came after Streit. JT, Bailey, Grabs, Moulson, Hamonic. MacDonald. So no, Snow has not brought in quality vets in their prime to help them.
