It seemed like a good idea at the time

Inspired by the Andy Delmore thread this thread is about personnel moves you liked when they were made and have since come to regret.

I liked the Delmore trade. I thought Ruff could make him into the next Jason Woolley.

A couple other moves in this category:
Selecting Marek Zagrapan
Signing Shaone Morrisonn

I thought Steve Bernier was going to be a star.

He was picked ahead of Getzlaf, Parise, and Kesler.

I don't regret that trade necessarily, but it could have turned out a lot better.

I never understood why everyone was so hot for Morrissoon. When the Caps let him go, their D was dreadful, and he was part of the reason why. Big guy who can't skate well, doesn't hit, or put up points.

Slava Kozlov.......I would have called Hasek's bluff and let him retire if I knew what would happen when Kozlov became a Sabre.

In terms of legitimate good players we obtained, who then proceeded to suck as Sabres, but then became good again somewhere else...

I think Raffi Torres and Slava Kozlov top the list for the past decade.

Kozlov takes the cake though, for feuding with Ruff, pouting and whining in the media, and then trashing the city on his way out of town.

Personally, Kozlov is my pick as "worst Sabre ever."

Definitely Torres and Bernier. I thought both of them would work out.

Bernier and Torres, I can see leino being on this boat a a couple years from now if he's only putting up 50 points and has this 4.5 cap hit

Yeah, any of the recent "X for a 2nd" trades are probably on this list for a lot of people. I never really expected too much from Moore or Torres, but they didn't even meet my low expectations. I know a lot of folks were expecting big things from Torres, and that certainly didn't happen.

We'll see how Boyes does back on wing this season. Hard to judge a guy after he spent most of his time here playing out of his natural position.

50 points isn't that great, but if he does it while playing a defensively sound center it wouldn't be that bad. Better than Connolly last year, anyway. Btw if I were you I'd look to get my username adjusted.

Also Bernier is fine IMO. The trade turned out to be Campbell (UFA) for Ennis and McNabb (and Torres, but still)

What makes the Campbell deal even better is that, he got his massive contract and became a 2nd pairing defensemen at best for Chicago. Can anyone in the league honestly say they would rather have Campbell and his massive contract over Ennis and McNabb as well as the rental of Torres?

Agree with all of the above and would add in three others, which aren't regrets as much as examples of big letdowns compared to the expectations upon their arrival:

2008 FA signing of Rivet, who was far less effective for his 3 years in Buffalo than what I hoped for IMO

1999 Trade for Juneau as a rental, who never provided the offensive support the offensively-challenged '99 team needed.

1995 Trade for Simpson, who would have been a great partner for LaFontaine-Mogilny, but hardly played any games with them or in general for Buffalo because of his back problems.
