Man in the winter classic when crosby was hit it didnt look that bad that he would be out this long......thats crazy as much as I dislike the pens The game of hockey wont be the same without crosby....
No disrespect to Crosby, but I've watched a lot of terrific hockey that did not involve him.

Even if he does come back this year or next and then what?

With a concussion of this magnitude, one more hit, that very next significant hit could potentially end his career
and you know he'll eventually get hit

So how would the league and the players handle that?

Every time he's on the ice, you can't give him preferential treatment because he's Sidney Crosby
It's a hard hitting big boys game...

and no player wants to be the "one" to knock him out for good

He will say he isnt ready.

No way is it an early retirement announcement. It would have leaked by now.

You mean he hasn't been yet?

Reason 1 of many why the NHL isn't taken seriously!

Not totally true.Begeron was out for a whole season with a serious concussion and came back.
Play hard in the Bruins run for the cup and was a key player in their run.
Who's to say Sid doesn't come back just as good as Begeron?

Baseball.

(Sorry I don't have a photoshop of Crosby's head ontop of MJ's.)

True but Sidney has to be Sidney to be effective

Paul Kariya was one of the premier superstars in the league until he got totally rocked by Scott Stevens in that one playoff series
He was never the same after that. Sidney can now be viewed to be in the same category until he proves otherwise

and Bergeron unfortunately isn't the same creative offensive player he used to be

Even if he was missing a leg he wouldn't announce retirement at this point, but make a general statement about him being back later this year, without a schedule.

I beg to differ .As the season progressed Begeron got better. Come playoffs he was rock solid on both sides of the rink and seem pretty good with the puck in his controll.
On Sid i agree we won't know until he steps back on the ice but throughout history many players have come back from big head shots. The difference now is their called concussions. With the exception of Lindros,Kariya,Savard and a few others,History is on Sids side.I have knocked sid for on ice antics many times but i hope he returns as he is one of the best..if not the best player in the league and it would be a shame to lose that kind of talant.

To be fair by the time Stevens knocked Kariya's socks off, he had had a few concussion issues already.

Kariya problems started when Gary "I hurt Canadian superstars before/during major international tournaments" Suter cheapshot cross-checked him after he scored a goal.

Losing the best player in the league hurts no matter your personal opinion of said player. As a Caps and Wings fan (IIRC that's what you are), naturally you're not going to be Crosby's biggest fan. As someone who is neutral, I can freely admit that the NHL suffers a big blow if Crosby is no longer a part of the league. It's just fact.
