Depth.... we're drowning in it. (NJD)

New Jersey has more NHL caliber players than most of us would like. As a result, our payroll is nearing 60 million. Now, we all know that NJ can't possibly support that. So, I'm here to say that everyone (except, IMO, Patrik Elias, Scott Gomez, David Hale, Paul Martin, and Martin Brodeur) is available. But understand, we're not looking for prospects, we're looking for players.

NHL caliber players on NJ's current roster

Patrik Elias
Scott Gomez
Brian Gionta
Jeff Friesen
Viktor Kozlov
Jan Hrdina
Jamie Langenbrunner
John Madden
Jay Pandolfo
Sergei Brylin (rumors have him resigned)
Erik Rasmussen
Krzyzstof Oliwa
Darren Langdon
Jiri Bicek
Grant Marshall
Pascal Rheaume
[Zach Parise]
[Aleksander Suglobov]
[Adrian Foster]
[Tuomas Pihlman]

Scott Stevens
Scott Niedermayer
Brian Rafalski
Colin White
Richard Matvichuk
Paul Martin
David Hale
Sean Brown
[Matt DeMarchi]
[Ray Schultz]

Martin Brodeur
Scott Clemmensen (resigned yesterday)
Ari Ahonen

Wouldn't exactly count Foster for anything at this point, same with DeMarchi. Bicek, Langdon, Rheaume, and Oliwa are okay players....but the type you'd see move around on the waiver wires.

And I think you mean Ray Schultz and not Nick Schultz. Not exactly an NHL caliber guy there.

Most likely guys to move are Friesen and Kozlov (3 mil and 2.3 mil apiece). Probably for a pick and/or prospect if we need to free up the cash.

So, you say you have too many NHL calibre players, but still want to trade them for other NHL calibre players?

Thats not how you pare payroll.

I know... what I'm looking for is a deal like Lamoriello would make, but I honestly can't come up with a decent example myself.

I would think San Jose would like fanfavorite Friesen back for a decent prospect and a midround pick.

I can't find any trade examples either, especially since you want to pare down payroll and still want NHL guys back. The only guys that I see that are expendable and make some coin are Friesen and Kozlov. I think you may find a taker for Friesen but Kozlov is going to be very hard to move IMO.

If Stevens retires, that would reduce the payroll and since the defense has great depth they should be alright without him.

Ah whatever.... make an offer, any offer, that reduces payroll. However, if you're asking for a core player (ie. Langenbrunner, Elias, Gomez) we'd better be getting back quality.

I hope that is a joke. I wouldn't want Kaberle - he's A, overrated, and B, makes a lot of money. I wouldn't give you Martin OR Parise.

Hmm...

If I were Detroit's GM I'd offer something like Liv + Wooley for Rasmussen and White.

Your joke is equally as hilarious. Martin will not get you Kaberle.

I didn't think so. But Kaberle wouldn't get you Martin either. They're both valued more highly to their own club than they are to the opposing club.

But think about it this way: last season, Martin, as a rookie and three years younger than Kaberle, put up 24 points to Kaberle's 31 and was a +12 to Kaberle's +16. Martin played with the poise of a veteran and made none of the typical rookie mistakes, but fit right into NJ's top-4. Kaberle still has puck-poise problems, despite being in his sixth NHL season. More importantly, though, is Martin makes 1M where Kaberle makes 2.9M.

Kozlov has more value than a fourth.

Bonk went for a third. Between the two, I would take Bonk. A fourth in next draft seems fair for Kozlov.
