Belarusian defender "Lokomotiv" Ruslan Salei, could not have been on board the aircraft that crashed today in Yaroslavl.
According to the "First Channel", he stayed in Minsk, and waited for his team, which was supposed to arrive in the capital of Belarus, in order play to match tomorrow with Minsk "Dynamo".
If Salei missed the plane and if I'm getting names and memory correct, 11 former NHL players were killed, presuming all the rest were on the plane:
Head coaches Brad MacCrimmon and Igor Korolev
Assistant coach Alexander Karpovtsev
G Stefan Liv
D Karlis Skrastins
D Robert Dietrich
D Karel Rachunek
F Jan Marek
F Alexander Vasyunov
F Pavol Demitra
F Josef Vasicek
And maybe 12 - not sure about Vitaly Anikeenko - I know I've heard the name.

The Marshall crash is the only thing that comes to mind. Terrible tragedy.
You're right, I completely forgot about that one.
The worst I could think of was the plane crash in 1956 that killed 4 Saskatchewan Roughriders coming back from the CFL All-Star Game.
I do hope the NHL does something for this. I'd say a leaguewide memorial patch and perhaps donating some of the profits from the all-star game if a charity is set up.

My deepest condolences to families of victims, their friends, entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl organization, city of Yaroslavl, and all KHL fans. A truly tragic and sad day for hockey world.
Dont know any Russian, but from what I saw on the Death List, Salei's birthdate was not included there, so I believe the reports that he wasnt on the plane are correct.
Pavol Demitra was a great player in his day, what an awful day for the KHL and the world of Hockey, so many great players no longer on this earth.
And I can only imagine how Salei feels right now, his teamates and close friends that he was planning to meet up with, wont ever arrive, god that sucks.

Daniil Sobchenko - Sharks draftee in the draft that just pasted.
I'm not even sure what to say right now. Only thing I can is my condolences to the families of everyone on the plane and to the KHL. One of the crew members is alive still last I read.

According to my minimal knowledge of Kyrillic letters, the Name "Ruslan Salei" was mentioned, but with a wrong date of birth. I still cannot believe the horrible news that so many young men (most of them younger than me) lost their lives. My condolences go to all the loved ones of these victims.
The KHL cares more about expansion to the West (and financing foreign teams with Russian money) than providing basic safety issues like safe aviation for it's teams.
What MUST follow is a basic rule that no KHL team is allowed to fly with a plane that has any safety issues whatsoever.
Watching ESPN, thought I'd give it a try this morning only to find out about this terrible news. Another sad day for Hockey. I haven't been too keen into the KHL but Lokomotivs were one of the teams I would hear about. Very very sad.
