I can't believe how insane this summer has been. This is absolutely horrible.

I pointed that out earlier that it's like 5%'ish if true. Anecdotally I have heard that aviation in Russia is nowhere near as safe as in most developed nations, with aging fleets, and repairs/maintenance on a schedule far less frequent. Will be interesting to hear what the case is, but not gaining altitude is likely NOT the pilot's fault (though given it's Russia, it wouldnt shock me if that's what is officially stated), so I'm guessing it's the plane. Also, this is not the first time that model crashed on takeoff.

Not surprised. I googled the plane and it looks like a POS. F you Russia.

I was not surprised either, that`s usually the first thing that comes to my mind when you say "Russia" and "plane". I just didn`t want to jump to conclusions that fast.

I just got the news in class and read through this thread. This is sickening. I'm not gonna be able to concentrate for the rest of the day. All the conflicting reports are really tugging at the heartstrings.

Also, if the plane was only carrying 40 and it's rated for >100, it likely was not overloaded (unless maybe they packed the hell out of it with commercial shipping since they knew >1/2 the seats were empty).

Not overloaded, but the weight was distributed wrong, at least according to German news.

Thanks for all your work, RG.

I'm still in shock, I wish none of this was real.

An unacceptably high number. We'll see if Russia will do anything about it though.

They'll blame the pilot. Guaranteed.

The #KHL released a statement saying the League is not going to change the regular season calendar at this time.

Nor should they, really, because the best way to honor a hockey player (team) is to play the sport they loved.

There could be many reasons for the crash. It could have been pilot error or equipment error or even a combination of both. Hopefully they find out to prevent future tragedies. This probably could and should have been prevented.

Forgive me if this has been posted or I'm wrong, but wasn't it Vasyunov who finally scored a goal and it just happened to be RIGHT AT the 16:00 mark of that Quebec Invasion game at the end of last season? I remember going ballistic because it was right at the part where the crowd goes wild to signify 16 years of no Nordiques... then not hearing enough about how cool it was that the goal was scored right then.

...What a horrible, horrible tragedy. R.I.P. all.

I understand them not changing the schedule, but um, there is a full team missing....

its kind of hard to do that.

this is the problem with our instant information and instant gratification society. it widens the margin of error and erases credibility. Saleiís family and friends probably had the worst, most tortuous morning of their lives. what a tragic story, through and through

The fact that they aren't changing the schedule will make it pretty awkward any time a team should have played Lokomotiv, but ends up with an off day instead.

Artem Anisimov came up with Locomotiv, says he knows about half the roster. "I feel like it can't happen. I feel sick about that."

Can't imagine how Anisimov is going to deal with this.
