Pilots were not qualified to fly

Tomorrow will mark the one year anniversary of the tragic plane crash that killed the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team of the KHL. Forty four people died.

"Little solace to the families and friends of those lost one year ago, Russian investigators charged a former airline executive Thursday in connection with last September’s devastating plane crash that saw 44 people killed, including most members of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team.

Vadim Timofeyev, former deputy director of now-defunct Yak Service Airlines, has been charged with “a violation of the rules for transport safety and operation of air transport” for allowing two unqualified pilots to fly the plane that crashed shortly after takeoff, killing all but one on board on Sept. 7, 2011...."

RIP

Considering there was talk of pilots being drunk this isn't exactly shocking. Why they waited until the one year anniversary to leak this is more of a shock.

I guess to announce "real" charges against the individuals of the now defunct company and to make it an impressionable point for the world to know would be to announce it on the eve of the one year anniversary of the crash, ( just a guess).

Wow can't believe it's already been one year.

RIP Lokomotiv, we all miss you!

But yeah I read that article yesterday. The whole thing sounded like pilot error from the start so this report is no surprise. Like Joe said it seems weird to come out at the one year anniversary though.

So this can be moved to the op section if it feels to out of place but I thought the news stories were kind of related.

So remember last year that cruise ship hit a reef and cap-sized leading to 35 people dieing off the coast of Italy. They got the black box and its not pretty, he lied to the coast guard, lied to his staff, lied to the guests, phoned his wife and said he saved the boat with an awesome maneuver. He also said he "fell" into a life boat. Being charged with a whole host of things including abandoning ship (didnt know that was an actual law captain goes down with the ship if all guests are not off).

I was pretty angry reading that and now to hear this pilot had forged documents and it led to the death of this whole hockey team is a tragedy. Both of these idiots are responsible for so many deaths and the jail time will probably be a slap on the wrist

I think as far as the pilotes they both died at the crash right?
And as far as the captain, he will get jailtime. But most importantly, he is concidered a joke of a person in italy. Nobody wants anything to do with him. He has zero respect left and will nevwer be able to live a life in comfort or pride.

I live in Jönköping the hometown of one of the victims stefan liv. They had a huge cermony today in his honour. I also heard they had a freindly hockey game with Messier and Gretzky in russia for the honor of the team today. I think thats more right to focus on than who is to blame.

I was watching a 5th Estate episode on the Costa Concordia disaster about a month ago, the actions of Captain Schettino was deplorable. The reason why the cruise ship was so close to the coast was because of a stupid captains game to see who can salute the Isola del Giglio the closest. One of Schettino friends ad beat his previous mark so he was trying to take it back. Then he only compounds his error by failing to properly inform the passengers, his crew, and the coast guard of the situation before leaving the ship himself. 30 dead and 2 missing because of this .

However there is one bright spot, the deputy-mayor of Isola del Giglio, Mario Pellegrini, when he saw what had happened fromt eh first survivors to reach shore managed to find a way onto the doomed vessel. What he found was unorganized chaos as people were desperately trying to board what few life boats were available (half were on the other side of the ship and now submerged) and no senior ship officers around. He stayed there for 6 hours on the sinking ship directing passengers and lifeboats and was one of the last to leave.
