I think can sum up all of the Sabres fans feelings about this matter:

Very surprised to see Phoenix put Brett MacLean on waivers. HF had him ranked as PHX's #3 prospect. He has good size (6'2'', 200) and has shown offensive ability in the AHL (50 pts in 51 games last season, and 65 pts in 76 games in 2009-10). He's often praised for his ability to score in high-traffic areas. He's only 22, too. I wonder if NYI claims him and hopes he can find a spark with Tavares, his former center in Oshawa.

It's not like they have much to lose. And it already worked with Grabner. Might as well try to catch lightning in a bottle twice.

Leafs place Connolly on IR

It's actually a misnomer to dub this under "News article":

Quote:
Maple Leafs forward Tim Connolly was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday, leaving the team with the maximum 23 players on the roster.

The team had to declare their opening night roster by 3pm et on Wednesday. Connolly was placed on IR retroactive to when the injury occurred.

Connolly, who is eligible to return as early as Saturday, has been slowed by an upper body injury he suffered when he fell in practice last week.

The injury-plagued Connolly, who was signed as a free agent this summer, has averaged less than 60 games per season over the last four years.

I feel bad for him. He's really should have gone to someplace like PHX where nobody would care if he misses time and generally disappoints.

There's a ****storm on the horizon with his name on it.

what does placing a player on IR mean. I always thought it meant that his daily salary didn't count against the daily cap. Is there a minimum time frame for IR?

edit: looks like it's a 7 day minimum.

Regular IR has no cap implications (player is still on active roster), but it allows you an extra roster spot to replace him with while he is on IR.

Yeah, it's at least seven days for IR and 24 days or 10 games for LTIR.

Placing a player on IR or LTIR does not make their cap hit disappear; they still count against the cap and their replacement does too.
In the case of LTIR, teams can receive an exemption to exceed the cap by the same amount as the injured players salary, but only after they have used up all of the extra space they have accumulated to date.

Connolly going on IR allows the Leafs to get to 23 players, which they were already at prior to claiming Steckel.

It's two games now. Then 15 games of suck while he's still injured, but playing. Then about five games of, "HOLY CRAP! AWESOME!" then LTIR

with the circus that is the toronto media, i wouldn't be surprised to see timmy's behavior at the bars making some headlines by the end of the season, especially if he is not producing.

Could anyone imagine the clamor here if the Sabres of yore had pulled the same sort of move the Flyers just did by assigning Brayden Schenn to the AHL to start the year, ostensibly to insure he does not get a $1M "B" list bonus? Heh. Panda. Monium.

They don't have enough cap room to accomodate his bonus.

To be fair the Flyers have a long history of paying to put a winner on the ice. Its fairly easy to believe their reasons. If the Sabres of yore had pulled this, it would be a lot tougher for fans to buy the explaination.

True. And at the same time, they aren't above dealing someone they've recently signed/acquired if they think it will make their team better right now.

The olden-Sabres would have had it be described as a dink move by a dink organization, regardless of if they were cap-constraints or not.

With the CBA expiring, bonus money has to be earmarked/tagged as used against the cap. There is no option to put it against a subsiquent season as was done prior since the agreement is set to run out.
