Schenn would have qualified for a $1.405 million bonus payout - which counts against the salary cap - if he played in all 82 games with the Flyers this season.

Thus, by spending Thursday on the the AHL roster, Schenn would immediately save the Flyers that money off the top of the cap. That bonus clause reportedly only applies to the 2011-12 season on his contract.

The bonus counts this year because the CBA is expiring.

so he doesn't get that money now or is just excluded from the cap? because if by doing this they are taking away 1 million dollars from a first year nhler, thats pretty "sh word"y.

He would have gotten the bonus at the end of the season if he played in 82gms. He hasn't earned it yet nor is it something he has right now. But because the CBA expires before next season, Schenn's cap hit for this year has to include the potential bonus. By doing what they are doing the Flyers guarantee he wont get the bonus. So they reduce his cap hit from 3.11mil to 1.75mil. It makes perfect sense for Philly to do this to get their cap situation squared away.

If thats the case, you have to wonder what his agent was thinking putting that in his contract. With the CBA expiring there was a good chance any team he was on would have done this to remove the headache. Could you imagine a team talking him into the year with a 3.11mil cap hit. Then he gets a minor injury and misses 2-3 games thus eliminating any chance at that bonus. That would have been a colossal waste of 1.45mil in cap space.

He'll probably be back up as soon as he misses that first game.

From the same article

Curiously, on the day that Brayden Schenn had his locker moved from the Phantoms’ locker room down the hall to the Flyers’ big boy room, the Flyers “loaned” their prized prospect to the AHL.

We say “loaned” in quotations because he may not actually be traveling far.

In fact, Schenn may still end up flying to Boston with the Flyers.

The bonuses were pretty over the top. I believe the bonus this nullify's is a million or so in change for play '25 minutes a night or more every game in a season'

So, its not like it was possible for him to meet the bonus anyways.

Is it just me, or is Thomas a "very good" goalie behind an elite defense?

It was also a bonus for playing in all 82gms. See linked article earlier in thread.

To be fair virtually every other year this is a non-issue, because the bonus cushion would kick in. But being the last year of the CBA, there is no bonus cushion this year, and therein lies the reason they had to do this.

And he was never going to get that 1M anyways...that would require him playing 25 minutes every game for 82 games. Even the best forwards wouldn't be able to do that...one 24:59 game and you fail.

Versus commentators practically pulling out the old "he was asking for it" defense for Chara.

Thats on Giroux. What an incredibly stupid move on his part. All he had to do was use his speed to skate through and get the puck. Ironically by trying to avoid getting crushed he got crushed.

I'm sure there is already a thread on the main boards or there will be one soon demanding a suspension.

on Giroux !?!

I don't care what he should have done, you don't hit a dude in the back, Chara had plenty of time to read the numbers
