Penguins sign Richard Park

I'm now convinced Crosby will miss the entire season...they are spending the money he'd count against the cap!

Wow, never though I would see him again in a Pens jersey. Should be a good depth/WBS signing, he was still a good penalty killer when he left the Islanders if I remember correctly.

35 so likely used to add some experience and help the younger guys on WBS and at Pittsburgh.

just some good old camp competition as far as I see it. Shero really likes to pack the stables in that bottom 6. Hoping one of the kids beats out Park and Williams.

Yea we actually have a lot of depth forwards now in the AHL that include a good mix of younger prsopects and some older vets. Solid move.

Holy 1994 Batman!

Anyway, this is exactly the type of signing I did NOT want. He would have been a perfect signing right about now had we not re-upped with either Adams or Dupuis. He could have been insurance in case Vitale wasn't ready for the fourth-line C role. Or maybe third-line insurance for one of the kids if we didn't bring Dupuis back. Since both are back, this wasn't really necessary.

It's bad news for Letestu, though. Park can easily beat him out of a job, imo. Also bad news for Jeffrey and Tangradi from a numbers perspective.

I've always admired Park's game, but I just don't see why he is needed on this team. I also don't see why we're not bringing in people with a scoring pedigree if we're going to take a flyer on somebody. Cory Stillman, J.P. Dumont, Yashin. That type of player.

Anyway, Park can make this team. I have little doubt. His style fits. But again, he's from the redundancy department of redundancy.

Nothing against Park, but I hope he never plays a game for the big Penguins on this deal.

Now this is a blast from the past. Who says our 2nd round picks never make it? Brings at lot of experience and versatility, great skater, can play all forward positions, two-way player, can kill penalties. Good depth signing.

Park had two years remaining with Geneva of the NLA before both sides dissolved the contract last week. He must believe he has a real chance at making the big Pens. Considering he had three 30+ points seasons on Long Island before going to Switzerland, maybe he does.

Haha. This guy was such a Pens killer with the Isles. I like this depth signing. He provides a veteran for WBS and a nice call-up for the PK if we have a rash of injuries to guys like Dupuis etc.

I generally agree here although I'm not sure he beats Letestu out of a job. But you are right this is extremely redundant. I know we want to have veterans but we already have a logjam of potential bottom 6ers. From my count (assuming Neal, Kunitz, Sully, and Kennedy in top 6) we have:

Cooke, Dupuis, Letestu, Jeffrey, Johnson, Tangradi, Vitale, Adams, Asham, Williams, MacIntyre, Park. That's 12 and I'm probably missing someone.

More than likely Tangradi will head down just from a numbers perspective but we can't risk Jeffrey or Letestu to waivers (more so Jeffrey from my perspective). Johnson and Vitale are probably sent down at the beginning of the season and hope no one picks them up (probably a safe assumption). So that still leaves us with 9. Assuming Crosby is put on LTIR, we can keep 8 of them up so I would guess the lines are:

Cooke - Jeffrey - Dupuis
Asham - Letestu - Adams
MacIntyre - Williams

Just a guess.

Yeah... I just don't get this signing. We have a plethora of depth players already. Whatever I guess.

Its getting to the point prospects wont be getting time in the AHL let alone the NHL.
(Bit of an exaggeration.)

Someone find Shero a hobby.

Serious over-analysis. It's a two-way for a reason. He's coming from Europe as a 35 year old as an over the hill bottom 6 (4th line) PKing winger. You're right it's the last thing we needed, hence why it probably will have little to no bearing on our NHL roster.

If guys like Letestu, Jeffrey, and Tangradi can't beat a 35 year old PK specialist, on one of the best PKing clubs in the league, out of camp then they don't deserve it and probably regressed in the case of the first two.

I'm not sure any of those other "scoring" players you named would even be upgrades over those prospects at this point in their careers. I'm also hesitant to conclude they'd sign a two-way which makes their inclusion even less relevant here.

Not sure but I was working under the assumption that he would be. I haven't heard news either way. If he's not, we'd still have to leave a roster spot open for him or send him back down which we would risk losing him. Maybe I'm overvaluing him, but I definitely think a few teams would be interested in picking him up.
