This is what Kyle Wellwood's career has come to: The Winnipeg Jets sign him and are too embarrassed to announce it.

He's too upset that the Leafs didn't sign him. What an arse Steve Simmons is.

There is no such thing as a bad one-year contract.

Wellwood can help the line-up.

Heard good things from sharks fans last year, and for the low price/term... can't go wrong.

....ah yes, 4th line/AHL depth.....the thrasher's Achilles heel last season.

at least he didnt play for the moose.

...in the old days we would say a player was good or bad...today the first comment is he's worth the money or not worth it.....you dont get extra points in the standings for keeping your payroll low.

4th line? AHL? Wellwood IS an NHL player, and IS an upgrader on our third line.
Of course salary matters, you never want to over pay. Short term, small sum lessens risk. Wellwood is a good pick-up at 700k, he's a terrible pick up at 1.5 mil thats why salary matters.

Decent pick up for the 3rd line. I like this move. So....

Ladd-Little-Wheeler
Kane-Burmy-Antropov
XX - Wellwood- XX
Glass-Slater-Thorburn
XX

For those 3 spots.... Machacek, Maxwell, Klingberg, Gregoire, Cormier, Scheifele(sp?)

Should be good. Add Fehr when he is back and send a young player down. I like the lineup a lot once you add Fehr in healthy.

Is Stapleton going to make this hockey team?
Pressbox duty?

Stapleton will probably make the team. TN loves giving guys who have spent time in the minors a shot, and I think Stapleton fits that profile perfectly.

IMO, Cormier, Klingberg and Gregoire should all spend the majority of the season in the AHL. But McArdle is another one who might make the team as an extra forward.

Ladd-Little-Wheeler
Kane-Antropov-Fehr
Wellwood-Burmistrov-Stapleton
Glass-Slater-Thorburn
(Machacek, Maxwell, McArdle, Koci, Pesonen, etc)

Even before the signing of Wellwood, I thought Stapleton's chances were questionable. This may seal it. Not even pressbox, maybe even the rock (ie. St. John's).

why?...he still takes up a spot on the ice....if he scores 22 points making 700k, is it any different than scoring 22 points making 1.5m?.....will the jets get more points in the standings because his 22 points cost the owners less?...are the standings pro-rated based on payroll?

i dont understand the obsession with value for money...all that matters to me is how can he help the team win games on the ice.

maybe i'm out of touch with being a fan these days....seems like i am supposed to care that the owners are getting value for their money....i couldn't care less what he makes...i care how he affects the team.

25 points from a third line/fourth line player who has some sense of defence appears acceptable. Especially on a one year deal.

Exactly what I've been trying to say over twitter. He looked good in the later half of last season with the Sharks and into the playoffs. He was in shape. I've been tired of the fat and buffet jokes since 10 minutes after they started.

if his 25 points include 18 goals on the third line like he put up a few years ago then he will be helping the team win with 25 points. thats pretty good production from a third liner.

a guy who played in the KHL last year is a solid 3rd liner?....

i guess i am out of touch....gladly....i couldnt care less about payroll until it affects our ability to make moves...we are a long way from that problem....i just think its weird that the debate over players always relates to their economic value....as if that matters to the team's performance.

i think i am just the only one who doesnt give true north a free pass on everything they do....they have done little to address the thrasher's shortcomings...this, although slightly better than most of the other moves they have made, is not the answer to 4 playoff games in 11 years.

I'm a season ticket holder, thus in a way I am investing my money long term in this team. I certainly care if a player is being over-paid and the value the team gets in return.

I like the Wellwood signing however. I was always a fan of his since his Toronto days. I think he has what it takes to be a second line centre as he was buried in the depth charts of Vancouver/San Jose over the past few years. As long as he and/or the Jets staff puts to rest the issue concerning his conditioning, I will be satisfied. The worst case scenario for him is a bottom 6 forward but a 700K deal is worth the price.

THIS.
Not to mention signing bad contracts cause the cap allows you to doesn't mean you should. Why would it be okay to ever over pay someone? If Chevy starts give the Wellwoods of the world 2 mill a year, I would be very concerned when the time came to ice a contender and cap space is needed. You're either fiscally responsible or your not, it should not matter what your cap position is.

Also, who is the solid third liner from the KHL?

We added a player for nothing, on a cheap one year contract. An NHL vet with some scoring upside and an idea about his own zone.

How could anyone be unhappy with this move? I am no fan of Kyle Wellwood but am certainly willing to give the guy a shot given our current roster.

he has some history with Chevy in Chicago, he has a one way deal worth $700,000 (one year), and the people i talked to say he is the fastest skater on the team. He played with team USA at the worlds this past spring. my guess is he will be given a shot but will need a solid camp

I am hoping for him and hear he is a great guy
