Offshoot of the other thread, though this seems more plausible in the near future. Also, do any other leagues have female referees or lineswomen?

I have had the pleasure of being a linesman with several women in my refereeing career and they have held their own just fine in scrums and fights.

Female lines(wo)men/assistant referees are fairly common in association football, though it varies greatly from country to country. Female head referees are definitely less common, but there are some of those as well.

Hockey is definitely behind other sports in this regard, but there will definitely be women refereeing top men's competition at some point in the future.

I see no possible reason why there couldn't be.

Most of the refs are the size of the bigger guys. We women don't have a lot of representation at 6'2 (+ muscle)and larger

heck, I'm lucky to be 5'6 and overall pretty muscular for a woman. I'd be crushed like a bug at that level.

I don't see why there's a reason not to, but I just can't see it happening. I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I wouldn't care the slightest if it didn't happen.

I'll say yes to this one. I do think we will see female refs as well as refs from Europe very soon. The result will be a mess but that's what we already have so who cares.

I couldn't see a female linesman(?). As pointed out above, there aren't many women who could grapple a an angry 6'4" male athlete to the ground. It would really take a freakishly large woman to be in that job without a safety concern.

Refs? Sure, why not. One of the best refs in my beer league is a woman and she has no problem with those duties.

I would say no. I'd hate to have to see a woman having to try to separate angry strong men from fighting with each other. Way too dangerous to let them.

Refs don't separate the fighters - linesmen do (refs are supposed to watch to make sure no one does anything else away from the fight that needs to be penalized).

You would need an uncommonly large and strong woman to be able to be a linesman, but a ref is a lot more likely. Many of those guys are quite small even now.

Is there all of the sudden a push for women in the NHL with these recent threads? Anyway, the big question would be why would they have a woman in the first place. There are tons upon tons of referees and linesman waiting in juniors to get promoted. If you were in that position would you like it if a woman who didn't pay her dues gets in there just because of her gender?

Near future doesn't mean tomorrow. Who said anything about not paying your dues? Also, jobs are based partially on merit, not just tenure/seniority.

I think there's a chance that women might be better at breaking up fights and scrums. Players know to respect refs anyway, and they're certainly not going to be rough with them.

Anyway it just depends on the ref, I don't think gender matters all that much in this case.

There are accidental collisions with refs all the time. A typical women would get severely injured in a collision with any average player in the NHL. I guess if you made a rule they had to be 6'+ and 180+ it could happen.

At least this time players and coaches would be right to say the ref had no balls...

They have the luxury of carrying weapons to disable criminals. Refs, are possible, line(wo)men, no way.
