Does anyone else like teams in different sports from rival cities? For example, I bleed orange for the Flyers but I'm a Redskins fan.
i am the same... it's due to the fact that my dad is basically a redskins fan only, likes sports but follows them the most. so sorta attached myself to his team growing up, everything else is philly.
though i have a big soft-spot for the eagles due to growing up in north delaware and now living in philly... compared to the flyers and the NHL, i'm a very passive NFL fan which sorta allows for it... when the skins go down i'm disappointed, but not destroyed. when the flyers went down this year... a few depression drinks is a good way to describe it.
I'm not sure if this counts or not. I live in Massachusetts but I bleed orange and black. Bruins are alright but I don't like them nearly as much as I do the Flyers. I like all Philly teams but with the exception of the Flyers, I like all of the home teams in Mass more than Philly. As you can see my my avatar the Springfield Falcons are my favorite professional team, all sports combind. I've been to many of their games only to see them lose, now that their with Tampa they might actually put together a few winning seasons. The Coyotes didn't care at all. Different story though.
I was a huge fan of the Flyers in hockey, Reds in baseball and Vikings in football in my youth but as I got older, though my passion for hockey and the Flyers escalated to mammoth proportions and continues to this day, I had diminished interest in football and baseball but still root for my teams in each of those sports.
Baseball- Red Sox (To a small extent I'm even a Yankees fan, but I feel pressured to take only one side in the rivalry)
Football- Eagles, with small interest in Chiefs and Patriots
Hockey- Flyers, small interest in Senators
Basketball- No favorite, but interest in Mavericks because of Cuban/Nowitzki
So I guess the fact that I have a mild interest in a Dallas team means something, but that's about it.
When I went through puberty, I realized that it was time to stop being a front runner, and root for the home teams. So I always root for Philly teams in all sports first. I retain other teams to root for in the very likely event the Philly team gets knocked out, but I always root for the Philly teams first.
In football, I like a different team in each division (at least it used to work before realignment). Packers(boy hood favorites, Lombardi, Starr, et al), 49ers (John Brodie), Jets (Namath), Browns (Cowboy rival, and Jimmy Brown, Paul Warfield etc) and Chargers (John Hadl, Lance Alworth, Gary Garrison, Dickie Post and those uni's with the Bolts!).
Baseball, The Yankees are my favorite team (Mickey Mantle - my favorite player, and all that history), I also have liked secondarilly, the Giants (Mays, McCovey, G Perry), Indians (Sam McDowell) and Twins (Killebrew, Carew, Allison, Kaat, J Perry).
Basketball - Who cares, as a kid I rooted for the Warriors and (yuck now) Lakers of Jerry West and Gail Goodrich)
Hockey, Montreal Canadiens (Belleveau, LaFleur, LeMaire, Savard, LaParairere (sp), Wilson, both Mahovlich's, Houle etc).
For me, to not root for the home team is akin to rooting against the US in the Olympics.
